I think the point he hadn't grasped, so couldn't get over is that the argument is that we can use existing oil and gas for the period before we find alternatives, so the claim is that no new extraction sites are required. It's bollocks as an argument anyway as it relies on them finding a realistic alternative to fossil fuels to cover the base load and building an unrealistic number of wind farms and solar arrays for the huge increases in electricity that are going to be required if the madness continues, but the fact he either didn't understand it, or chose to avoid showing himself up by offering it, shows he's either stupid or deceitful.
