I think we all know that Ely is going to get a new deal, it’s inevitable

He's probably the least productive supposedly "creative" player that I can ever recall in a Saints shirt, he's literally been a waste of a player since he came back from Jockland.
Ralph and Ruben play him because he presses and tracks back at the expense of creating problems for the oppo's defence.
No point in pressing and winning the ball if you do nothing positive with it.

Not sure about that, I think he's probably a good bloke but too "nice" personally think we need coaches to instill determination and a winning mentality.

I was thinking more academy level as he came through the ranks here and may be a good role model for the youth.

not to mention Sulemana, Stuart Armstrong and even Aribo, plus Doyle knocking on the door.
It’s bad enough these two blocking playing time when we’re already relegated, but attacking midfield has enough players that we will find hard to shift without dragging back inadequate ones.

It won’t be a good start to Martins tenure if he gets either of these to re-sign

We need a ruthlessness now. No loyalty is owed to anyone after the performances this season, they’ve been overpaid for underperforming for two years so let’s show them the door and start fresh. If we cannot find a better player than Ely from within our own ranks or elsewhere then I would suggest we will be playing below the premier league until we can. Same goes for Walcott, Adarma and others. Professional defeatists one and all.

Walcott doesn't have a defeatist attitude, He has been one of the positives, well at least for me over the last 15 games.

Fair enough but our points record for the last 15 suggests I’m not being harsh.

Absolutely, I think a big clean sweep is needed not just him.

There’s always a sentimentality when it comes to players like Walcott, memories of what they have done in the past make it hard to really evaluate what they’ve done recently and what they can offer going forward. I’m of the opinion now that it’s just a question of whether we can replace what they contribute and possibly upgrade it.

with Walcott, the most commonly spoken of contribution is his presence and experience rather than what he does on the pitch yet we still had no fight and no passion. Walcott has been a ‘nice to have’, if he hadn’t been here I don’t think there would have been any noticeable difference.

Walcott has been our second best player after Alcaraz since Selles took over. I know its a low bar but if you are going to target one specific player, he isnt the one, I do think its time for him to go in way of a rebuild, but he would be good enough for us next season, unlike many others.

Sentimentality hasn't come in it for me, He's just been really good.
He'd also be really good dor Doyle/Ballard.

to be fair, I didn’t target one particular player but 86 picked Walcott out as an exception which is fair enough as I agree he has been better than the rest bar Alcaraz. Where I disagree is the idea that he has anything to offer over and above what we could get from a younger, hungrier player. If he really has much to offer the younger players and as some sort of mascot behind the scenes I haven’t seen any evidence of it on the pitch.I am feeling Ruthless at the moment and if someone or something has been there for the last 2 years and delivered little then I’m all for getting rid, players, identities, training, psychics, all of it should be prepared to be replaced.
