Yeah, to be clear, I think that if you instituted it in that way you wouldn't be drawing lines. The lines are necessary because they're trying to measure down to the mm something that in practical terms cannot, particularly because perspective is nightmarishly difficult to judge when you're dealing with body parts that are not firmly on the ground.
Offside should be gauged by the eye. Prior to Var no one would have said Walcott’s goal was offside, I suspect perfectly timed would have been the comments for it
Back to square one. If you leave it to be gauged by the eye then you are just inviting far more controversy. Don't you remember how bad it used to be? No decisions were agreed upon by all. Brighton would have said 'off', Saints would have said 'on'. VAR is annoying as ****, because it's such a joy killer. It's a horrible feeling waiting for an important goal to be decided over. But, at least it offers consistency. That decision - sh*t though it was - would have been the same ten times out of ten, and for both teams. Basically it's down to the striker. He needs to know, that being in line with the last man probably isn't going to be good enough. He has to be noticeably behind him. Walcott is atrocious at beating the offside trap, always has been.
Yeah, not clear and obvious. But Brighton reaching Europe is a good story. Saints picking up a point or 3 on the way to the championship is not.
It's been the same all season though. They didn't just get strict for that one decision. If it had been up the other end, same decision.
Disagree. When ZAR was brought in it I thought it was to ensure that referees did not make clear obvious errors? To stop klopp et al moaning post match. If they can’t see it’s clear on the pitch then they can’t complain. The problem is if you’re looking at freeze frames and measuring all day your idea of clear and obvious will be different. They need criteria for what clear and obvious is with offside.
Measure offside from a specific body part that is not an outlier- so the torso. A foot in front is not significant. The benefit of doubt should be with the attacker too.
Totally agree. Going by frame by frame, even with high speed technology they are guessing when it’s so close. Surely you’d go with “clear & obvious”! Another total **** up by them! Jeez total knobs overseeing the game
Funnily enough, I always thought that linesmen (and Sian) were pretty good at getting offsides decisions right. VAR could have been a valuable aid to the officials but typically, the incompetence at the FA makes them concentrate on unnecessary minute differences that leaves them open to ridicule. But the truth is, whatever the authorities implement, it will never be accepted because bias rules the day in football. Every manager, player, and fan want decisions to favour them. VAR was invented because refereeing decisions were being questioned by everyone and this was supposed to be the answer but now VAR decisions are disputed. No surprise there. Lately there have been calls to be able to hear the reason for decisions as they happen. Probably pushed for by the media, they've managed to convince the punters that if they know why a decision has been made it will turn everyone into Socrates (the philosopher not the the Brazilian footballer). It's not going to happen, everyone wants it to go their way, it doesn't matter how they get there.
All I want is fair & regarding Theo’s, I wouldn’t have an issue if they had a “clear & obvious” flag & a similar “goal” went against us. Measuring to guesstimate microns isn’t right, imo & if in doubt, favour the forward.
Fans are fickle bias ****s though I feel I’m quite an honest fan… and I think it should be quite obvious. I think a still frame of the offside like above should be seen by var, then I think it should be obvious to overall the on field decision. On this occasion goal, if Lino flagged, not given
I think the FA should scrap VAR and bring out a new rule: if you criticise the referee in public it’s an automatic 3 match ban and 3 weeks pay fine. That’s for managers and players. If you want to complain/appeal it should be done behind closed doors via the appropriate channel. Problem solved, no VAR.
If they do I don't think it'll include the offside tech as it'll be a stripped back (cheaper) version.
There is nothing wrong with the concept of VAR. the issue is the rules were invented without VAR and they don’t suit VAR. A rule update is needed. Offside is when the attacking player’s torso is clearly ahead of the defending player’s torso. VAR itself could be improved if it was on a 30 second timer and if no decision is made it reverts to ref’s decision. Pissing easy.
Yup. Nine time out of ten, I’d sooner trust a lino’s judgement in real time than a studio panel poring over re-runs. There’s more room for confusion in the latter scenario imo.
Football as a game is so difficult to play. Scoring goals is really hard most of the time so goals are precious things and the offside rule interpretation is being used to get rid of them when it really should be used to encourage them. I’d back Wengers proposal, daylight between striker and defender is offside, anything else is onside. Give me more goals, encourage strikers to score.
