Yea, even 20k is really. What’s a championship clubs turnover. £10-15m? 20k is 1m a year. How many staff does the club have to play, let alone 25 senior players. And all the other overheads and expenses. Particularly for a goalkeeper, I think it’s a lot. It’s a much easier position to fill than say a striker or dazzling winger.
agree darlow is a good keeper, but is he worth 20k+ a week at championship? is he worth that turnover compared to say ingram i don't think so goalkeeper is not the position that is costing us 6th or 10th
Oh don’t get me wrong a lot of his attributes were Sunday league, but his shot stopping/reflexes were absolutely world class. Like genuinely not a keeper in the world better than him in terms of reflex saves. Catching, distribution, command of box, concentration on the other hand…. But still, as mentioned by someone else, That performance against spurs will never be beaten by a city keeper I don’t think.
15m turnover would be at the low end in the championship. 15m just for the wage bill wouldn't be particularly high.
Outside teams coming down from the prem with parachute payments. 20/25k a week for a keeper is high In the champ. It's difficult because he does compliment us and make us stronger. But would he have as big of an impact as a successful winger/striker or battling midfielder would on or final position. We don't have an endless amount of money unfortunately
Our turnover last season was 15m and that was at the low end in the Championship, it will be significantly higher this season.
Massively disagree there mate. Obviously depends on what system a team is playing and what positions are needed but as a rule, after a goal scorer, a goalkeeper is the most important position to get right as they gain/lose you the most points. Ingram is a very capable goalkeeper at this level but simply not close to Darlow ability wise. Hard to say obviously, but Darlow could be worth 6-9 points in close games over the course of a season. That could be the difference between mid table or a play off place.
Depends how Rosie sees it I guess, Ingram’s stock is quite high at present, I just feel more confident with Darlow in the sticks, no slight on Ingram as he more than proved his worth over the last season but for Rosie’s style I don’t think it’s up for debate
Ingram was worth more then 6-9 points to us this season with his displays. Yes darlow is marginally better then Ingram but it's nowhere near as big of a gap as people make it out to be and I'm confident in saying that with my 30+ years of being a goalkeeper at pro teams, coaching keepers at a pro level and scouting them etc..... If money was no object then god yes bring in darlow and pay him that money, but for us it's not a endless supply. So if ( and I've no idea if it is ) it's a choice between darlow and a top striker / winger etc then I'd have to say in my personal opinion, go for the outfield player as they would have a bigger impact for us. Hopefully we have the financial clout in place to have our cake and eat it though. Obviously you and others may disagree, but that's part of the fun of this place
Nobody is underestimating the importance of a keeper, but it simply is an easier position to fill with a steady hand on a budget than most others, particularly with the promise of being #1. There are a lot of good keepers out there that would move for game time. In terms of turnover, a quick google shows Kieron Maguire suggesting clubs without power shoot payments turnover between £15-20m currently. Even with that extra £5m above what I’d guessed at, 20k a week still represents a significant commitment.
Many non-parachute clubs also have owners putting money in over and above turnover though. An owner can put in 39m in a rolling 3 years over and above turnover. Your 20-25m then effectively becomes anything up to an average of 33-38m for budgeting purposes depending on what the owner is prepared to put in. And more clubs than you think are running close to their FFP caps.
Ryan Kent, Allan McGregor, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield and Filip Helander will all leave Rangers when their contracts expire this summer. But Steven Davis, who will also be out of contract, remains in discussions with the club about his future. That goalkeeper might be an option
Oh yeah course it is for sure, opinions are like arseholes mate we all have them! I’m surprised that you wouldn’t place a top keeper higher up the list of necessities for a successful team given your background. Then again, if you don’t see much between Ingram and Darlow then I suppose that’s your reasoning. I just feel personally that there’s a much bigger talent gap between the two even if that does seem harsh on Ingram who’s been a good servant for us. Also as an aside, I had an inkling I might know who you were and what you said re your background made me think I might be correct. I’ll PM you, I’m probably wrong anyway.
