I wonder if he's either inherited or been taught some of his dad's showmanship? Eubank was a master at drawing a crowd. Good boxer, but a great entertainer, even though I couldn't stand him at the time.
You are correct to a certain extent, however these days there are about 12 belts for each division & sub division. In those days there was one belt. Not just heavyweight mate but from all weights, some of the all time greats. Lamotta Marciano Tunny Hagler Hearns Andres Louis Ali Foreman Frazier. That's just a few mate.
I heard a couple of years back that Jnr was aa bit of a dick. But he was only a kid then and an be forgiven.....if true. Snr has made pointed remarks about the offspring of wealthy men not having the fight, drive and desire to do well, so there ma well be a bit of a "get it up ye dad" about him. I saw a video o him on a speed bag and he looked the business then.......but they don't hit back.
I know it is hard to judge era's but Lewis sits in there with them quite handily. At least 5 boxers still plying their trade sit in there very well too
That may be true but like I said before you have to take into account how far they let fights go in those days.
6 at least i reckon. Pacquiao, Toney, Jones Jnr, Holyfield, BHop, Barrera Probably Mayweather too. You could make a case for Moseley fairly well. Wlad will never get a defining fight, so I'd discount him. Of course future legend Tyson Fury
Watched the Thriller in Manilla documentary last night - brilliant Two great, but very different boxers 2 grade a ****s
Wlad is the only fight I can recall from Lewis that may have been allowed to go longer in the old days. If it had, Wlad was going to get messed up badly. I'm not a Lewis fan boy or anything like that. He was pretty uninspiring. He broke David Tua's heart. It wasn't exciting, but he got the job done. The times he lost don't look good, but that can happen to anyone.
Dont like any of them. They may have been great in the ring but pound for pound Ricky Hatton was just as good a boxer as them and definately a much better human being and sportsman than them
Rebel, look up some of those fighters I mentioned mate. Lamotta v Robinson Hagler v Leonard Tunny & Marciano both retired unbeaten. Hearns & Andres world champions at 3 different weights. Lamotta was a middle weight but a total animal, he wanted to fight Joe Louis but couldn't ever make the weight step up. Just have a look, let me know what you think.
I have seen all of them, except ironically Tunney who although a new yorker is still hailed as a son of Kiltimagh, Co Mayo. Robinson rightly regarded as the greatest of all time. I was a big fan of Tommy Hearns. i don't know why I didn't get into Andres. Not to talk about him in the same breath as these guys, although maybe I should. Kirkland Laing was some fighter. Looking at his record now it doesn't look that great, but he was truly gifted.
i loved the hagler-leonard fight.....two great champs going at it. that was a great era for middleweights cos you had tommy hearns and the awsome roberto duran. they all fought each other and all were epic battles
Not quite sure why they try to wipe Gene Tunny's unbeaten record from the archives like. Never knew his family were Irish mind. I know it has something to do with his Navy career but can't remember why. Rorschach, aye , Duran I forgot about him. ****ing immense that lad. 70'S & 80'S middleweight was awesome.
The book about Gene Tunney is really good. For those who like WWE (i'm looking at you Martin), Jack Tunney was a grand nephew of Gene Tunney. Lamotta will forever be De Niro, not a bad way for your legend to love on.
