    Be lucky…..

2:35 pm Newton Abbot - King Of The Lake 6/5 (1 Point)
    3:25 pm Worcester - Huelgoat 5/4 (3 Points)

An excellent card at York and we’ve a few bets on Day One of the Dante Festival.

    1.50 York – Lucander – 66/1 William Hill, 50/1 Bet Victor, 40/1 Bet365, Skybet, Paddy Power.
    1.50 York – Thundering – 10/1 Bet365 & Skybet, generally 9/1
    – ½ Point Each Way Both, generally 5 Places.
A typically competitive handicap where the draw really is a factor as anything drawn wide is at a disadvantage. That’s a pity for supporters of Real Dream who won nicely for us last time, as he comes here well fancied, but stall 17 makes it really tricky so he’s passed over at around 5/1. We came down to a final two, well drawn with York form and at each way prices.
Lucander has seemingly improved for the switch to the George Baker yard and the application of blinkers, whilst he’s thrived in Bahrain, winning twice and looking suited by the step up in trip when winning over 1m3f in February. He returned with an excellent staying on 5th behind Lord North in the Group 3 Winter Derby, where he’d have been 3rd in a few more strides. He’s top weight here, but a classy type, is twice a course winner and makes plenty of appeal at a huge price.
Thundering will be better for his return at Ripon where he wasn’t suited by the soft ground. He was a progressive 3yo last year and ran a cracker on his only run here at York when a staying on 2nd off the same mark as he races off here. A bit of a slow burner he only ran once as a two, but had a busy season last year, improving with experience. He’s expected to improve again as a 4yo and a big run can be expected as he’s sure to prove better than his current mark.

    3.00 York – Creative Force – 1 Point Win, generally 3/1
Was a costly failure at Newmarket on his reappearance, but showed himself as fine as ever with an impressive victory at Haydock on Saturday that wasn’t anything more than a strong piece of work. He’s a top class sprinter and looked right back to his best last time, albeit against weaker opposition, but it was the strength of his final 100 yards that really impressed. He’s constantly been competitive at the very top level over the last couple of seasons and looks sure to have another big year.

    3.35 York – Infinite Cosmos – 2 Points Win, 15/8 William Hill & Unitbet, generally 7/4
A very smart filly who’s taken to reverse form from her 2yo debut when 2nd to Sea of Roses, who had the benefit of a previous run. Infinite Cosmos finished her race off very strongly that day and with experience would most likely have won. She was reported to have thrived over the winter and showed that with an authoritative display at Newmarket on her reappearance when beating a nice field of fillies in good style. She comes here with the expectation of proving herself to be a genuine Epsom Oaks candidate with plenty more improvement to come.

    4.10 York – Caragio – 1 Point Each Way, generally 8/1, Top 4 Places.
On a potentially nice handicap mark off 93 here following a very promising 2yo campaign. He showed real promise on his debut when inexperience cost him victory and he hung in the closing stages, but was still only just beaten. He then showed the benefit of that run when winning impressively from a pretty smart sort from the Charlie Appleby yard. His final run of the season saw him finish 4th in the group 3 Horris Hill at Newbury, where his finishing position doesn’t quite do him justice, as he travelled really well and looked sure to go close, but didn’t get home in the soft ground. The front three that day are all rated a good deal higher than Caragio and back on a quicker surface in handicap company he looks to hold strong claims.

    Will send evening selection later

I have heard the Johnston's are very upbeat about the chances of Knockbrex(100/30) 5.20 York.

    We try again…..

    2:05 pm Salisbury - Juniper Berries 6/5 (3 Points)
    2:50 pm Perth - Conkwell Legend 13/8 (1 Point)

    1.50 York – Mondammej – 1 Point Each Way, Top 4 Places.
14/1 Bet365, Paddy Power, Corals, Ladbrokes, otherwise 12/1
He ran a nice enough race on his return at Ripon considering he was a little slowly away on racing on ground softer than ideal; as he’s proven in the past to be at his best on a faster surface, which he gets here today. When encountering a quick surface over 5f on the turf, his form reads extremely well, including a fine 2nd at listed level over course and distance last season. This race will be set up for him nicely as there is plenty of early pace, so it’ll suit his race style and he’s handicapped to go very close.

    3.00 York – Assessment – 2 Points Win, 3/1 Bet365, William Hill, Corals, Ladbrokes
A little skinny at around 3/1 for a 20 runner York handicap, but he’s considered to be better than just a handicapper and ahead of his mark of 91. A typical Sir Michael Stoute project, he’s been given time and that patience is expected to be rewarded. An impressive winner at Kempton on his reappearance where he was very strong inside the final furlong, he’s up 6lbs for that win, but was considered well short of peak fitness that day and has a lot of improvement to come. It’s hoped he’ll prove to be a pattern race performer, and is expected to prove hard to beat, even in a big competitive field.

    3.35 York – Passenger – 1 Point Each Way, generally 9/2, Top 4 Places.
A good looking son of Ulysses, he slightly surprised connections first time out when winning so impressively at Newmarket in the Wood Ditton as the mile trip was considered on the short side, but he showed a lot of class throughout the race and quickened nicely. This step up in trip will really suit and he’s reportedly been putting in some nice work since his debut run. Due to run at Chester, he missed that engagement due to the soft ground, so todays conditions will be ideal and a big run is expected, with the potential of a tilt at the Derby if things go well here.

    1:50 pm York - Persian Dreamer 7/4 (2 Points)
    3:15 pm Newbury - Resolute Man 13/8 (1 Point)

We’re keen on a 2yo maiden taking in winners at York, taking two against the field in the 1m2f handicap at York, a big price at Hamilton and have an Ante Post advice for the Derby.

1.50 York – Gaiden – 1 Point Each Way (Already Advised)
11/2 William Hill, Corals & Ladbrokes, generally 5/1
Ran a race full of promise at Windsor in what was clearly a decent event as she bumped into a decent winner who followed up in a conditions event on Thursday. She didn’t enjoy the clearest of passages, but travelled really well and having quickened to challenge the winner she just got tired in the ground. Being a daughter of Mehmas, she’ll appreciate this better ground and whilst she comes into this as a maiden, her form is probably as strong as anything else in the race and as mentioned she’ll be better on this quicker surface.

    3.00 York – Moktasaab – ½ Point Each Way, generally 8/1, Top 4 Places.
Returning to 1m2f having been racing over further since a fine 3rd over this trip at Glorious Goodwood, he’ll also really appreciate this better ground, having not been at home on the soft ground at Newmarket. He’s a strong travelling type with plenty of ability, and whilst he went close at Newbury over 1m4f last year, he’s certainly better suited to this trip. There is sure to be plenty of pace on here, which will also suit, so he looks to have plenty in his favour.

    3.00 York – Majestic – ½ Point Each Way, generally 10/1, Top 4 Places.
Put a line through last time, as he just wasn’t at home on the soft ground at Newmarket, but still plugged on quite well once the race was over. He’d previously run well in the Lincoln, also on soft ground showing he’s more than capable of winning off his current mark. He’s 6lbs higher than when winning the Cambridgeshire last year, but that was the first time he really showed his potential. He’s still pretty unexposed and is open to further improvement. A return to form is expected back on better ground with the trip sure to suit.

    7.55 Hamilton – Onesmoothoperator – ½ Point Each Way, generally 22/1
Come into this race in better form than his recent finishing positions would suggest, as he simply didn’t get home at Musselburgh last time on ground with plenty of cut in it, which was the same case over 2 miles at Wolverhampton. Last season he ran a cracker on Shergar Cup day when a staying on 3rd over this trip and also ran pretty well at York in a big heritage handicap. He’s dropped a couple of pounds in the handicap, has a further 3lbs taken off by his jockey and this is a drop in grade from those efforts. With the drying ground in his favour, he looks to be overpriced as a repeat of that Ascot effort would see him go very close.
Potential of a rule 4 if Cumulonimbus doesn’t run after winning yesterday.

Epsom Derby, Saturday 3rd June – Sprewell – 1 Point Each Way, generally 12/1
Based on the Dante and on a line throw White Birch who finished a neck 2nd; Sprewell rates as an Ante Post Bet for the Derby. White Birch had previously narrowly won the Ballysax Stakes in Ireland defeating Up and Under by half a length. Up and Under then contested a Group 3 Derby Trial at Leopardstown where he was given a sound 3 length beating by Sprewell, with the winner pulling away in the closing stages and looking sure to benefit from the step up to 1m4f. A maiden after two runs as a 2yo, he’s a big horse and was never going to be a 2yo, as stated by connections following his win last time. He won on his reappearance as a 3yo over an inadequate mile trip, against highly rated opponents where he was very strong in the closing stages. In a year with no standout middle distance 3yo, his victory over Up and Under is as good a performance of any of the Derby contenders, he’s still very much on the upgrade, will certainly be aimed at the race and is overpriced with bookmakers reacting to those that ran with promise at York yesterday, rather than the bigger picture.

3:07 pm Thirsk - Allo Al Khawaneej 9/4 (4 Points)
    4:00 pm Wexford - Senecia 7/4 (1 Point

    3.15 Newmarket – Jumbeau – ½ Point Each Way, generally 22/1 & Top 4 Places.
Plenty of respect for Powerdress who drops significantly in grade having run in the 2000 Guineas last time, but at the prices Jambeau makes plenty of appeal on her return to action, off a potentially lenient mark. She was a good 2yo, winning on debut before a fine 3rd at Listed level, followed by an excellent 5th in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot. That was a very deep race where she finished around and ahead of rivals that are now rated a good deal higher than her mark of 87. Whilst she slightly disappointed in her two remaining starts last year, she didn’t enjoy the ground at Ripon & just got going too late at Chelmsford. She was a sizable filly as 2yo, so open to improvement as she strengthens into her frame and she’ll really appreciate returning to a decent surface on turf and this extra furlong.

    3.35 Newbury – Light Infantry – ½ Point Each Way, generally 11/1 & Top 4 Places.
A very good albeit lightly raced 3yo finishing runner up in two Group 1 races in Deauville behind Tenerbrism and Inspiral. He then switched over to Australia for one run and ran with great credit in a hugely valuable race. He returned to action at Newmarket and can be marked up on that as he only really got going late on behind the front runner winner, who had the run of the race. In a bigger field and more truly run race, he’s taken to turn that form around. He’s sure to strip much fitter here and a big run is expected.

    3.50 Newmarket – Montassib – 2 points Win, generally 15/8
Can hopefully make up for a costly defeat last time, where young Cieren Fallon found all sorts of trouble in running having held his mount up well off the pace. He was an unlucky loser that day, but showed he’s in excellent form and has ideal conditions again, as he’s best on a decent surface over this trip of 7f. He’s still only 1lb higher than when 4th in the ultra competitive Bunbury Cup and off the same mark here as he was last time, he’s almost a winner without a penalty, form wise and is taken to gain swift compensation.

    4.25 Newmarket – Strong Impact – 2 Points Win, 4/1 Bet365, generally 7/2
A really nice filly for the Roger Varian yard, who ran with immense promise on her reappearance when a staying on 2nd to Infinite Cosmos at Newmarket. She was apparently the standout in the paddock that day and having been given a nice educational ride, came home with plenty of running left in the tank behind the high class winner. This step up in trip will really suit and whilst she takes on a very short priced Fav, an upset could well be on the cards, as Strong Impact is in receipt of 6lbs from the Odds On Fav. She could well develop into a pattern race filly herself; she’s nice.
