At times yesterday, Gooch looked like a winger playing centre half. The reckless sliding challenge on the touchline in the 1st half where he completely missed the ball was an example of that, but for a lad playing so far out of position he's been excellent. I really hope we can get Ballard and Alese back for any potential final - you have to assume our luck will run out at some point with all these square pegs in round holes

Well said marra,it’s what I’ve been saying to my son for the past month with these square pegs but I’m starting to think are we over estimating the opposition and most don’t have the nouse to exploit it…….. I hope

I don't mind Luton. They are a good side who play to their strength. Always like to see a team like this punching above their weight. Come Tuesdays though, I want us to do our usual away performance that will see us through to another playoff final. Yesterday we eventually imposed our game on them.

Long story but we turned up on the tiny island of Berneray at 2.30 only to find out four nights accomadation wasn’t available and we were homeless (long story)
We were booked into the local Bistro at 6 and popped in to tell them our problem and that we wouldn’t be taking the booking and the three women at once got their phones out and rang every available local venue and in 10 minutes had secured us a glamping pod.
Within an hour they’d found us the other 3 nights in a B& B 20 minutes away. What a lovely bunch of islanders they were.
We had our meal trying to keep updated on the match with a patchy Wi-Fi but managed to get the final score
Spent a cosy night in our pod and I’m writing this on their Wi-Fi, off to our new digs this afternoon.
Some people are just naturally kind and we found three of them yesterday as we’d have been sleeping in the car.
Most importantly of course the lads won.

Rob Edwards himself said in his post match interview that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have orthodox centre backs if your “defenders” defend and get physical the way ours did.

It’s obvious that in the next leg they will get tonnes more balls into the box. The hope is that that opens the game up and allows us loads of countering opportunities

Also on Lyndon playing a wide centre back role - this lad could make 15 mistakes on Tuesday and I’d still see him as something emerging a Sunderland legend. Big words I know but he epitomises EVERYTHING I want a Sunderland player to be.

He’s never going to have the promise of somebody like Ekwah or Michut or Hume. But he doesn’t need it. Yesterday he was absolutely screaming at Clarke when he gave the ball away. He’s leading like a warrior. And he’s a huge under the radar reason for our renaissance

Was Ekwah a freebie? I genuinely think he’s coming on the rails as the best of the lot.

There were shades of Vieira yesterday.

Agreed. You can see and hear that he's one of the main leaders in the dressing room. He's demanding high standards of the team.

The attitude of doing anything to help the team is rubbing off on others. I've heard Hume mention Gooch twice when he's been interviewed about playing out of position, he's obviously taking the same attitude.

Can’t have been more than a few hundred grand which is mental really, there must be so much potential being wasted in premier league academy’s
