Disruption is clearly not OK, but undermining? It’s subjective. Clearly having some peaceful protests taking place will undermine the event, because it’s a voice against the events.

The monarchy and its supporters should be able to ignore these people and get on with their day. The coronation didn’t ruin my day despite being all over the media and in the shops, I just got on with things.

I went out for the day. It was nice. Monarchy to me represents two foul elements of humanity - patriotism and nostalgia. :emoticon-0132-envy:

And let’s not get started on class…

... and that's your right and choice. I support many protests, but not some of the behaviour, that's my right and choice.

I thank you for your message of hope, it seems 18 million plus, enjoyed the day, it certainly wasn't wasted. I recently wasted three hours watching another Saints foul up, won't get that time back.

I perceive that there were many Protest organisations that could have used the event to mount a protest, they didn't for one of two reasons, respect for Monarchy and fear of being arrested. Both admirable reasons.

Nobody should fear arrest for peaceful protest.

Couldn't agree with you more, a peaceful protest within the law is perfectly OK, sadly pretty inefective in most cases.

Not really, it wasn’t about stopping the coronation. It was about giving the Republic movement publicity. Ironically in arresting 64 people the met only helped give them more exposure.

I personally am totally against the Republican movement, I wouldn't break the law to make the point. I also respect their right to hold that opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened in the future, but hopefully not in my lifetime.

When laws are changed to suit the state and suppress others, there's a bit of a problem! Laws on protests were changed last week, just in time for this party. Funny that.
But it's ok for now, because people follow the royal family in blind faith sadly. Once these laws are introduced, it's hard to go back on them. Who knows how they'll be used in the future.

I guess if the legislation did the trick then it was justified, whether it was fair and legitimate, that's another question, shades of big brother perhaps, if we were to become a Republic there would a lot more of that.

The event is basically over, time to wind this thread up and get back to the joy and excitement of the Premier League!

There's also the humourous tolerant cutting thrust of wit and repartee of the politics thread to be enjoyed.

As far as I can tell they are a token institution keeping the equilibrium in the mess caused by a succession of useless, incompetent, incontinent, inadequate and inneffectual Governments?

I think all I've learnt from this topic is who I could happily enjoy a few pints with and who I couldn't.
