Charles & Camilla are very unlikeable as well which doesn’t help.

I feel like people mostly like Will & Kate. If they had skipped Charles altogether then it would have been a lot more palatable for most people.

It feels to me like both the monarchy and religion are fading out with time - for better or worse.

This is the problem I have with the republican movement. Their resentment of royalty is so great that those values are not just undervalued but totally dismissed.

I'm going to post something about this tomorrow.

I've had a great day today. Watched the coronation from start to finish, Mrs Game and I just munched our way through a ton of food and I only got up to take the dog out.

I would say a lot of people overvalue it.

How so? I think this is an extremely ill-considered opinion so I am keen to hear why you think this

Doing things in the same way simply because that’s what has always been done is not a good reason.

As I said - very ill thought out opinion.

Someone calculated that the odds of being born are approximately 1 in 10^2,685,000.

Well I would say that the chances of creating an organised and well functioning society that is made up of billions of individuals with their own hopes, fears, dreams & goals must be close to that. And yet somehow we have achieved it.

Think of the computer or phone you are using to type on this forum. Think of the man power, the co-operation & coordination that has been achieved to make this happen.

There is 100% value in doing things that have always worked.

We are where we are as a species because of the traditions and ideas that came before us. These aren’t trivial things to dismiss. You definitely need a balance between old traditions and new progressive ideas.

    I said overvalued, not valueless.

Traditions need to be looked at in context and their value weighed up against their costs. Look at how society has changed in the last 200 years, things which were acceptable are now not. Statues got thrown in the river, because that part of our heritage is completely unacceptable and at odds with our values.

I value tradition, but feel that this particular tradition is out dated and has no place in society.

Yes the monarchy once played an important role in ruling the country and brought order to society. I have a great deal of respect for the monarchs who carved out England and united us, but that was a long, long time ago.

And as for the probability of being born and the likelihood of having a functioning society, I would say that given the size of the earth and how long the human race has existed, this was not unlikely but almost a certainty.

The thing is, nature abhors a vacuum.

So if you throw out and disrespect the current traditions that got us to where we are; something big will follow. That may be better.. or it more likely will be worse.

I would argue that the weight of history points toward more violence and unrest and an all around worse society than we currently experience. The peace and prosperity we have right now is an anomaly when you zoom out. Based purely on this I would say that we have to be very careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water when making fundamental changes to society.

Ultimately this discussion is extremely important - I think that technology has made all of the old power structures completely obsolete, and society is still catching up to reality.

We have experienced centuries worth of change in just a couple of decades. Who knows where we end up in the next century.

Truss claiming her reward for wrecking the economy was a touching moment.

Nick Cave scrubbed up well though. Now if we could elect him as president that would be nice.
Better garden parties for a start.

Didn't realise you'd changed "unaware" from "ignorant" but I'm not offended in either case.

Was reading up on some French royal palaces recently. Did you know that they get tens of millions of visitors every year despite abolishing their monarchy over two centuries ago?

So I don't believe the tourism argument has much validity, those people would still come.

And the most-visited sites in Britain are led by Stonehenge and the Natural History Museum.
