Well as someone with little interest or dislike of the royal family I was feeling maybe I'm just being a grumpy old bugger. So I put on the tv today hopeful I'd be proud of the show we could put on.

I joined the show as Charlie boy was agreeing to stay protestant and keep the country that way.

So not for me thanks, back to Pluto tv.

I posted something almost identical to this before I saw you had beaten me to it. I even said Ant and Dec would get the job if it was left to the public. Uncanny.

    I've now removed it.

That's a feeble excuse, you needed to see the whole event to appreciate what it was all about, people disrespecting those that took part and the masses that attended to watch, says more about them than it does about the event. I hate to think what all those foreign dignitaries that attended would think of this kind of attitude.

Just got back from Newmarket. Refreshing absence of royalist flummery and forelock tugging serfdom on display at the racecourse inaugurated by Chatles II, I have to say. Frankie nearly won a handicap on the King's horse, which would have been a story I suppose. Instead, he won the Guineas on one of Prince Khalid Abdullah's.

So pretty much no different to now then? Yet the royal family would obviously bring more interest than some popularity contest winner?

Working in a school, I see a lot of young people so my statement, while not saying it applies to everyone, is based on what I see on a day to day basis. Also, you say respect is a two way street but I see a lot of kids who are given respect but certainly don't give it themselves.

Joys of working in a school. However this particular school maybe is a unique case... Because it's literally by far the worst school I've ever worked in. And I've worked in like 6 or 7 different schools. Also why ofsted ratings are a joke

Every time there's been a royal event, you always see sky or bbc or whatever interviewing multiple people from other countries who have literally come over just for the event. No way would that happen with a president.

My attitude is that it's insensitive and vastly outdated. Tradition is one thing, maintaining prejudice for no reason another.

I'm not telling anyone what to do, disrespecting, or passing judgement on others who enjoy such stuff. Yet "royalists" do seem quite determined to do so to those who find it silly.

I hope you enjoyed it, much better than watching MOTD these days I suspect.

I really do think "all those foreign dignitaries" will not be bothered by my attitude. Especially those fine examples of humanity Hang Zheng, Haitham bin Tariq and Hasssanal Bolkaih (amongst others) whose tolerance, kindness and integrity are famous.

Yes, except without the hereditary privilege and the idea that they are somehow better than the population.
People will still come to see the remnants of monarchy, they don't need an actual monarch.

I'm not sure what you were expecting, the monarchy has been intertwined with the Church of England faith since Henry VIII in the 16th century. Westminster Abbey is an Anglican ( CofE) church. And one of the monarch duties is to be "defender of the faith".
Actually, Charles has for a long time been aware of the diversity of faiths within the UK and at one time expressed a wish to say "defender of all faiths". For some reason ( maybe persuaded not to by the church) it didn't happen, but he was keen to involve all faiths with the ceremony.
For me as an atheist it makes no difference but I can still acknowledge the part that religion plays in the make up of the monarchy.

You may be interested to read this article in the Guardian about the subject.
    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ion-puts-focus-king-charles-religious-beliefs

If you don't want to bother reading it all, here's a short extract.

"The coronation liturgy, produced by Lambeth Palace in close consultation with the king, will accommodate Charles’s desire to involve leaders and representatives of other religions.

One innovation is a greeting to the king to be delivered in unison by Jewish, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim representatives at the end of the service. It will not be amplified, out of respect for the Jewish prohibition on using electricity on the sabbath. The chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, has been invited to stay at St James’s Palace on the night before the coronation so he can walk to Westminster Abbey, as vehicular travel is also prohibited on the Jewish sabbath."

Of course I enjoyed it, football is a bit dead in the water at the moment. The beauty of having some of those dodgy geezers here, that you mentioned is that while they are here they have to toe the line and behave themselves, it may come as an eye opener to them. As far as criticising anti Monarchy people, they are perfectly free to hold their views, that is what this nation is about, but a bit of gentle teasing won't do them any harm and you never know might enlighten them!

There is that thin line between need and want? As I said earlier priviledge goes with the job whether they want it or not. Harry didn't want it so he rebelled. he is still entrapped in the web. Your statement "people will still come", you need to delve deeper to find out why that is. You could ask the question why do pilgrims go to Lourdes? Why do Muslims go to Mecca? It's something that people in the World do. Why?

Ah yes, then we have someone to have a platform to say anything. In a world where so many people are susceptible to believe anything. Just think, if this was the case, we could have some like Farage in that position <laugh>

Ah, I’m enjoying this game of assumptions.

I thought flummery is a good word, but before I pinch it for myself I'll just check what it's actual meaning is.
This is all I could find
    Flummery - Wikipedia
    upload_2023-5-6_20-51-15.png
    Wikipedia
    https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Flummery

Flummery is a starch-based, sweet, soft dessert pudding known to have been popular in Britain and Ireland from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

I'm guessing your use of it describes over sweet, sickly behaviour?
