As I said Brexit has made the situation much worse ...

... sadly, the figures are only the ones they manage to find.

Despite all the slogans and statements Johnson, Sunak, Patel and Braverman have all failed.

The cost to the country is enormous.

Not quite as many I suspect, but I have family who were long distance lorry drivers and they said it was awful. If stowaways got on board and were found you were in more trouble as the driver than the stowaways, even if you knew nothing about them.

They eventually gave up taking jobs going to the continent because of it.

That route seems to have stopped or it’s not reported anymore.

They spent a fortune on it and the investment eventually put most people off. Same needs to happen with the boats. Keep depositing people back where they left five or ten grand lighter and it will soon stop. Which would be to France's benefit as well given they're the last stop before Britain.

'Progress' by going back to the days of Dickens ...

    ... they'll be reintroducing workhouses next <doh>

"A Home Office plan to house more than 500 people seeking asylum on a giant barge in Dorset is facing serious reservations from the local police commissioner and council leader, both of whom are Conservatives.

Councillors have told the Guardian that the department has failed to adequately respond to dozens of detailed questions about plans to place a barge containing 506 male asylum seekers in Portland Port from next month."

I've heard of the saying "Not in my back yard", but this is the tories we are talking about here, so "back yard" is probably a bit alien to them, so they've changed it to "Not in my estuary"

Agree, society's changed, look at Gordon's post about values and morals of being brought up on a council estate. Thatcher brought in shares and greed, Blair brought in looking after yourself through misinformation, the liar has taken this to a whole new level. Coupled with the recent explosion in available information through the Internet, making kids of today and easily led people to look at 0.001% of the population in envy, leading to depression and unhappiness. We need a reset and fast.

Of all the legacies from Thatcher the worst is that it's good to have a divided society where stepping on your your fellow citizens, to get ahead, is admirable. That's eventually lead to this current spitefulness where people are quick to abuse and shout about how they 'know their rights'.

Tolerance is eroding and society seems fractured and unhappy.

But ... only four days til Preston <laugh>

There are thousands of people currently being given a straight choice between A & B. My question to those who think people are being lazy is 'which would you choose'.

A - A council house, guaranteed benefit income for life, child benefits and no need for childcare, transport or even having to work.

B - A rental property with a private landlord, a precarious job with a zero hour contract and the need for transport, work, et .

One is certain, secure with plenty of free time ...

... the other is full of risk with no guarantee of continued employment and no more respect from anyone than claiming benefits.

Seeing what other people have used to lead to a mindset of “ I”ll try to work and strive for that” - now it’s “ where’s mine ? I’m entitled to that as well , and if it’s not given to me I’ll be unhappy “

I'm not sure you can put the changes (perhaps decline is a better word) in society down to what any particular government does or doesn't do. I think governments are more reflective of society rather than the other way around. They have some influence over societal trends and attitudes but are ultimately voted in to power because their policies and approach chime with attitudes that are already within society. Personally, I think media (and by this I mean all forms of media- e.g. academic studies of media influence now include social media in addition to the traditional ones) has a much more powerful role in shaping those attitudes.
I don't see society improving because a different political party comes to power. Attitudes in society will only improve when the majority of the population change how they see the world.
