My original post was addressed to someone else when I said it was ******ed to say that 'Norman' and 'Viking' were interchangeable, particularly in modern parlance (ironic, as the Anglo-Saxons termed the Normans 'French' precisely because to them 'Norman' meant 'Norseman' and they recognised a difference) I then elaborated on that and pointed out that Rollo, founder of Normandy, can justifiably be called a 'Viking' but that the 'Normans' as a group were the product of a founding Norse elite taking French wives and gradually adopting a Gallicised culture in order to better rule their new subjects. Hence why, by 1066, it's idiotic to call the Normans 'Vikings'.
