No arguments from me that the football delivered in most of the games under his tenure has been poor and the tactics baffling . I agree that he's not up to the job of managing a PL club.
I said the other day that he's no better than Jones as a manager. He's a disaster. Sunday night of the Liverpool game, the club should be confirming his exit and wishing him the best for the future.
I am quite staggered by this thread. Someone posted in here that they had met Selles when Jones was in charges and commented that he was a decent bloke. I do not resent Selles and have more sympathy with him than Jones who was an idiot and should never have been considered. I would be intrigued to understand what ability SR saw in Selles when they appointed him as a coach to assist Hassenhutl and then to take over the reins after they had binned NJ. In my opinion, I think that Selles success as a coach at Saints in debatable - not so much because of the coaching methods and results but because he has to deal with a playing squad that is disillussioned and incorporates a swathe of players no one seems to want and whose own abilities are open to question. I am not sure what Selles was expected to achieve as I think the opportunities to rescue the season had largely passed before he was appointed. I would not envisage him being at the club come August and I also feel that Selles will himself want to move on once the season had ended. It was probably been a useful experience for him but I think SR were wrong to experiment. The whole business of coaching and managing a squad of players in sport intrigues me. I cannot see any imprint from Selles on our team yet, by the same token, I am wondering if the call to appoint Dyche now looks so clever insofar that he does not seem to be pulling up trees at Everton. A young colleague at work was reading a management book on site a few weeks back and he was saying that he did onot really believe in the theory. I can understand that. Personally, I do not believe that there is a "winning formula" for managing people and, from my experience, think that successful management is dependent upon the ability of the people being managed to understand the ideas being implemented. I sense that this is the problem with our playing staff. There are no characters in the team to embrace what they are being carried out. I am convinced that there is a massive amount of dissent amongst the playing staff. I am aware of stories about Ralph not chatting to players and losing their respect but bringing someone like Nathan Jones in would have only exacerbated the attitude . You can understand how players might be disruptive and the tales regarding Orsic and Salisu as well as the inability to rely on new signings makes you wonder if personalities are vetted as much as playing ability. I am not sure Selles commands total respect and the fact so many players seem to have been ostracized must be due to poor man-management. The most sensible posts on this thread recognise that a new broom needs to come in a sweep the club out. I think that would include Rasmusen too. As I said previously, no one has come out of this season at Saints with flying colours and I cannot see what Selles was supposed to have achieved having already been part of the culture for 8 months beforehand. To single out Selles is a bit short-sighted when there has been nothing to crow about all season. I agree that SR may have inherited the problems but I think they have clearly exacerbated them. The appointment of coaching and playing staff plus the exodus of the management cadre running the club is all symptomatic of the fact that SR are out of their depth and incapable of manging a football club at this level. I am not confident they have the ability to rectify the situation next season. Any rebuild will require far more than the replacement of Selles.
Exactly this. Let’s hope for a settling summer where we can make fist of it next season. Won’t renew my season ticket otherwise
Unless there is a sharp turn around in our remaining games I think he is on track to be the worst 'permanent' manager in Saints history statistically. Currently on a 15.38% win rate.
His tactics and subs are that bad that I wonder what he would do differently if he was trying to make us lose.
I suspected that he had a bit to learn about man-management with the way that he spoke about Lavia (who has been one of the positives in a very depressing season). To say that he wasn't that impressed by a 19 year old with his first real taste of PL football when most have recognised how well he has adapted sent alarm bells to me about Ruben's judgement and the way that he has treated some of the new signings appears to be vindictive and ill judged too.
I don’t really see the point in playing our last 5 games with him. Let Kelv take over as caretaker, try and improve morale, play some kids. We’re a laughing stock whether he stays or goes now, he won’t be here next season. He’s so **** he shouldn’t be allowed to pick the team and lead training.
Having someone working for the club and in the building hasn’t worked. I say we outsource our management.
To be honest there is no point in changing the manager now. We are down anyway. No one can get a tune out of a team this broken. None of the players have any belief. Lavia was the only one that looked upset at full time
I don't think its about saving us from a relegation. Its about removing a bad influence from the club and hopefully having a bit of fresh air before we can start the rebuild properly.
It’s just annoying that someone can stay in their position when doing such a **** job, but then that’s football contracts I guess. I suppose he’s doing his CV no good, so there’s some justice.
