Seems he wouldn’t have had time for another job. Around that time , in Scotland a young lass aged 20/21 became an mp and was well lauded because she was also at university taking a degree. I find it hard to fathom to be honest. They seem to write books, go on radio and tele, write newspaper articles. I have no doubt some are genuine hard working local MPs, but they are a minority nowadays. The lure of westminster and all that goes with is what people seem to be in it for.
