I think you are right in society needing something to moan about. And it’s now becoming for so many the default to automatically reject and rebel against anything without any actual thought to pros and cons. All about “ look at me , I’m clever enough to avoid being controlled by anyone “ even if no intention of control

    https://amp.theguardian.com/politic...ainst-civil-service-unleashed-by-dominic-raab

Rishi Sunak needs to speak out against the “torrent of invective against the civil service” unleashed by Dominic Raab or risk a toxic environment in Whitehall, Lord Kerslake the former head of the UK civil service has said.

Or alternatively, we need to examine the conduct of both sides here.

'he's a bully, shut up' doesn't cut it here. Serious allegations against the civil service were made in the report.

Agree, looks like it's Hugh Elliott. Concerns among senior civil servants that Raab has been allowed to publicly traduce those who were subjected to his bullying behaviour, including the British ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott.

Some within Whitehall believe that James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, should publicly stand up for Elliott, who remains a high-profile diplomat, given that he is unable to speak out himself.

If Elliot is the one who breached his remit in the Brexit negotiations he should think himself lucky to still have a job.

The chances are there are a significant amount of civil servants half arsing their jobs - same as most other large organizations. It's a job for life, and we've just told them you can conspire to remove anyone who gets angry or frustrated - without swearing, shouting, or throwing things about mind you - because of your lack of professionalism.

Reminds me a bit of the Kruger-Dunning effect where people with a low understanding of something overestimate how much they know about it and people with a high understanding of it underestimate how much they know about it.

There's a certain type who think they're being highly intelligent by rejecting anything experts or anyone in authority says. The irony is, the "truth" these people believe the experts are hiding from us is often the most ridiculous and inaccurate take it on the subject in question.

….. and of course it’s the desperation to advertise their perception of their “ intelligence “ on social as of course it will really impress their hundreds of “friends”

Can there be anything more frightening than being stuck in Sudan, during an emerging civil war, and relying on James Cleverly to get you out <doh>

It could be untrue, of course, but he's quite a well connected chap and very Conservative.

"MPs have urged the UK government to launch a public inquiry to assess the effects of Brexit in a parliamentary debate triggered by a petition."

It's amazing how people on all sides, will happily question election results, government appointments, by-elections, votes, etc, and regularly demand an election to get a government out or whatever.

But where Brexit is concerned everyone simply has to accept it and never say a word against it ... "Because that's democracy".

So, if Labour are democratically appointed, will the same people meekly accept the result and any subsequent new legislation without question ...

... surely they can't expect to have it both ways.

I’m too long in the tooth to get involved in internet arguments Exile, I would hate to think I upset anyone unless they have a dig at me first.
