Bristol City manager responds to Ross McCrorie links with plans to conclude business early
Nigel Pearson refused to get drawn into transfer speculation as interest grows in the Aberdeen utility player

Ross McCrorie in action for Aberdeen
Nigel Pearson refused to get drawn into transfer speculation regarding Aberdeen's talent Ross McCrorie, amid links with the 25-year-old at the end of the last week.

Football Insider first reported the interest in McCrorie and Bristol Live can confirm the club are looking at the utility player over a potential summer move. However, City will need to fend off competition from other Championship clubs if they want to conclude a deal.

McCrorie fits the bill in terms of strengthening the right areas of the pitch. After the Middlesbrough draw last week, Pearson reiterated the message to address the balance in the squad when the transfer window opens including bringing in more defensive cover.

McCrorie, formerly of Rangers, can play both as a defensive midfielder and as a centre-back. He also played as a right wing-back in Aberdeen's 1-0 victory over Ross County on Friday while dropping deeper as a right-back in parts during the season.

When asked if there was any truth in the speculation following the defeat at Watford, Pearson told Bristol Live: "You know I don't comment on speculation that's generated from other people.

"All I will say is that we will try and do some early business at the end of the season. As soon as we can and we're working very hard to both identify and get closer to doing deals."

McCrorie came through the Rangers academy where he made 55 appearances whilst gaining experience out on loan with Ayr United, Dumbarton and Portsmouth. He featured 23 times in League One during the 2019-20 season, starting in Pompey's play-off semi-final defeat to Oxford.

City will only bring in players who are considered better than what they currently have and therefore McCrorie would arrive at Ashton Gate as a first-team regular, should the deal go ahead. He has a contract until 2026 to emphasise Aberdeen's position of strength over any deal.

Reinforcing the squad with defensive players remains the priority over the summer. The club have already identified targets who they will aim to pursue immediately at the end of the season with a continued preference to get deals completed early.

There remains uncertainty over the future of Tomas Kalas, whose deal expires at the end of the season. The centre-back will need to sign a reduced salary if he is to extend his four-year stay at the club although there are doubts over his fitness having made three league starts this season following ongoing knee issues.

Alex Scott continues to be heavily linked with a move to the Premier League and it's expected he will depart this summer with the club holding out for £25million. When Pearson addressed Jay Dasilva's future last month, he responded 'there is no definite outcome at the moment' as he approaches the end of his contract.

City do have money to spend following the sale of Antoine Semenyo but will continue to remain cautious with e xpenditure given the financial difficulties accrued through big-player investments before Pearson's tenure.

The City manager said earlier this month: "The financial climate has changed here so it’s not about transfer fees it’s about wages these days more often than not. There are a lot of players that are available.

"Premier League clubs are spending millions and millions but we have to be mindful of how we spend our money. It’s much more cost-effective to be in the market for players who are available on a free but we have a wage structure now and one of which we’re not prepared to move outside of.

"There has to be an element of fairness and we want to have a sustainable as a possible operation which it has not been previously."

Can't say I have heard of this lad tbh. I would say though, not many 'stars' of Scottish football do very well in England, even in the Championship, which is probably a better standard overall than the SPL. Look at Ryan Kent at Rangers as an example....

Came here on loan, Junior didn't play him, and City paid Liverpool £400k for the privilege.

Hope I'm wrong but IF we get £25million for Scott I'd like to think we'd go for a lot more proven quality than an Aberdeen player.
Seems to me he's jack of all trades - master of none.
    Still, in NP we trust.

I’m not bothered where he comes from if he’s good enough tbh. Using your argument who’d want to pay £25m for a Bristol City player.

As you rightly said ultimately we have to trust Tinns and NP to spend our money wisely. I do worry like you though whether filling the team with lower league players, whilst selling our best is going to work. We’ll just have to wait and hope.

Because he wasn’t good enough/didn’t have the right attitude. This was an MA signing to try and curry favour with the big clubs. Even you can see that RP

I said in another thread that we have to spend any money, whether it be from transfers out or just invested cash, to rebuild the team we can't spend a single penny foolishly. As has been said usually Scottish players don't seem to adapt to the Championship easily and if that is the case then why would we even look north of the border? Wise heads need to prevail this summer rather than putting them on the chopping block.

    My argument ?
He's a Championship midfielder for us and England Under 20's.
Scott is coveted my Premiership clubs.
Not a 25year old Jack of all trades in barely a pub league.

Ryan Kent was awful for us.
HE thought he was brilliant though - once he had the ball he would take it into traffic and get robbed. Greedy to a fault. Not surprised LJ wouldn’t play him - although I AM surprised we got him at all. Poor signing and a waste of money.
The other City players would give up when he got the ball. They knew they wouldn’t receive a pass from the tw@ so there was no point trying to get into a decent position or make a run. May as well get back ready to defend the inevitable onslaught when he predictably loses the ball.
    Good riddance to him.

I maintain that Ryan Kent was an MA signing thrust upon LJ so MA could brown nose the top PL teams.

Hard to say who actually signed him but MA was the CEO and dealt with all details, LJ makes a claim according to this report, all history now and of no consequence.
Liverpool winger Ryan Kent joins Bristol City on loan
    https://www.skysports.com/app/trans...l-winger-ryan-kent-joins-bristol-city-on-loan
'Johnson added: "I'm delighted to bring in a player of Ryan Kent's quality.
"He did very well at Barnsley last year and he'll bring genuine speed, athleticism and ball control to our squad.

"We thank Liverpool for entrusting us with another top player's development and I'm looking forward to welcoming him into the group."

Kent becomes City's second signing of the January transfer window following the loan arrival of midfielder Liam Walsh from Everton.'

We haven't streaked downward since streaky was sacked, we've stayed a Championship side for 3 years ,( I wonder if we can make the 4 you were so proud of?),Nige has signed less than 12 players, most of the expensive contracted players have gone, the wage bill is now realistic and under control, the huge debt he inherited has been reduced and is under control, they have maintained their unbeaten record at home in the Championship in 2023. bettered their points tally from last season and stand at 14th, surely we can now look forward to a much more successful season in 2023/24.

We have done nothing but streak downwards over the last 3 seasons. All that is done now. Next season, this squad and everything that comes with that will be fully NP’s. If he can’t get top 10, if not top 6 then progress has not been made on the pitch.

Complete nonsense, we've not streaked downwards, we have maintained our league status, dealt with the massive legacy of inherited debt, completely reduced the overpaid contracted players, bad management, fitness, coaching programmes have been replaced, morale, team spirit and team ethics are sky high, I do agree with the point progress must be achieved next season and firmly believe the club is now in a position to head for a successful one.

Can't agree on fitness and coaching programs. The injuries are every bit as prevalent as before, if not worse, and the number of goals we have conceded beyond the 90th minute the last 2 years doesn't point to better fitness and concentration. I don't recall many/any stories of bad morale under LJ...
The jury is out for me on whether the coaching is any better tbh. The rest I will give you, though, regarding wage trimming and cost.
