3 of my Grandparents were involved in the 2nd world war. My father's father got an RAF flyover at his funeral, his wife worked in the RADAR stations during the battle of Britain. My mother's father was an electrical engineer. We have a great photo of him riding through Berlin on a motorbike after the Gerries surrendered. My Family were very close to Sir Hugh Dowding.
One of my grandads fought in WW2. At the start he worked in the shipyards, he was drafted into the navy and sailed on the ships he helped to build. Made it through the war and died of asbestosis 12 years ago as a result of working in the shipyards.

The POW's got routinely beaten by the Japs and starved, him and his fellow POW's had a box that they used to capture insects and snakes which they ate. My other granda was too young to go to war. He's currently residing in hospital talking ****e.

Just watched 2 very old men on TV who fought and suffered in the war. When Big Ben struck 11 one started to cry and it brought a tear to my eyes, after all this time the pain of what he had seen and mates he had lost was there for all to see. Football and politics mean **** all, that poor old man meant everything.
My Grandad wa sin the Navy during the war -got a medal for sinking a German U-Boat... he claims he was pished at the time!
My great-grandfather was the victim of a mustard gas attack in WWI. Didn't do him any long term damage. He went on to have 13 kids
He did refuse to buy Japanese up to his death from a Brain hemorage (sp) in 1987. He used to wake up screaming in Japanese in the middle of the night according to my dad.
My grandfather ran away from home and joined up aged 15 at the start of WWI. Can't begin to imagine what that must have been like.
