It's an interesting situation. They obviously think it's in the bag. However, they're falling into the trap that the overzealous left always does - believing that being evil is justified to defeat what they think is a greater evil. They threw it away in 2017 because they were too excited with the prospect of settling old scores to think anything through. It'll take some going to lose it from this position, but this kind of thing is exactly what it takes. If Sunak has a few successes between now and then it might be a lot closer than we all think.
It is the fact that Starmer said he wanted decency and standards. Now look at them. It has taken them no time at all to show themselves up. Apparently it is on the advice of the democrats in the US they campaign like this. Havent even got their own original ideas it seems and they need to be told what to do. I dont see them losing the GE. Sunak could prove to be an outstanding PM but that wont be enough. According to one so called labour insider part of the plan with these lies they are spouting is to associate Sunak with the full 13 years, because the labour strategists see him as a really effective PM who will do a lot of good and they fear he will eat into their lead. I think the public have already made their mind up on the tories though, and personally so have I. That is why this is so absurd of labour and makes them look a disgrace of a party. Who knows, maybe the plan is for captain courteous to come out after the bank holiday, blame some nasty media person and withdraw it all, while telling us all this is proof he is still mr decency. Personally I think when he does have the decency to put his head above the parapet again large parts of the moderate media will make his life very uncomfortable. I really am genuinely interested if he has signed off on these lies.
Now we know Yvette Cooper (who I really like) knew nothing of this campaign launched by Labour. Odd since she is shadow home secretary and it is her domain. Stories saying Starmer didnt have to sign off on it so may not have known. Makes you wonder who is running the party and certainly doesnt lend itself to an appearance of a party ready to govern. The big question, is why is it still in circulation and why has a 3rd ad being published today saying Sunak doesnt believe thieves should be punished. Seems to me like our next government are uncohesive, at best.
Fair enough mate. I always thought she was my type of politician. Then she went all vague under Starmer, but recently seemed back on form. Would like to think she comes out of this **** storm with a moral stance, time will tell.
Goes back to, wouldn’t let the Brexit vote pass, was the luckiest mp in the country when her constituency split the yes votes and she scraped home, but her consequences led to the likes of Dennis Skinner losing his seat……horrible smug b****
Thank heavens for all those post-Brexit benefits and increased prosperity, they help balance the odd negative like this ... 'French and German tourists are beginning to avoid the UK, tourism leaders fear, because of post-Brexit restrictions on travelling with identity cards. Since anti-Covid measures ended across Europe last year, tourism has started to recover, but there are growing signs that significant numbers of French and Germans – two of the largest markets for UK tourism – are staying away. The decline is not just down to the issue of passports – Brexit has also battered the perception of Britain as a welcoming nation for tourists.' https://amp.theguardian.com/politic...an-tourists-turn-their-back-on-brexit-britain
Some of the blue rinse brigade would consider that a brexit benefit Bloody foreigners coming here and spending money don't want that sort
I don't think many of us really likes tourists, especially if you live in the Lakes, etc, but it's a big part of our economy. We seem to be criticising Europe an awful lot and boasting about how world beating we are in everything. We're being increasingly seen as arrogant and insular imo. It's all very well claiming we have great friends on the other side of the world but the French and Germans, etc, have been helping to keep our pubs, restaurants, etc, open and we'll lose more if they don't come. Although I suppose, with the plane cancellations and queues at ports, it's forcing more of us to holiday here
It is a major problem. Tourism contributes significantly to national and local economies. Brexit was always going to be a rubbish thing for us. Having said that I was in Stratfoed upon avon yesterday and it was packed out. Hard to get a table or a seat. Plenty of tourists but I do absolutely agree that we will suffer from overseas tourism. Probably not just tourism, but inward investment too. Like you I worry we are looking a rather unwelcoming little island.
Wonder who the tourist business would rather have Pierre from Paris Fritz from Frankfurt Or Eric from Ealing Double edged sword this tourist business good for business but can end up destroying what you've come to see / experience
Interesting opinion poll results from last couple of days. Labour lead down by 4 points apparently. Be interesting to see if other pollsters find the same. This before the impact of the current disastrous campaign has been seen. Sadly the conservatives have picked up points. The lib dems have done best, but I would rather see them gaining more. The lib dems putting out the most candidates in the local elections in years. Really going after tory strong areas. Delighted we have so many candidates across the uk now. Hopefully they really do start getting themselves in the shop window.
It's hardly impossible to come here all of a sudden either. I'd love to go to Disney in Florida but we don't have free movement so it can never happen. Except it already has.
If you want to avoid people talking about the government, the various PM's and one of the most significant referendums in our history ... ... not coming onto this thread every day would be a good start
The tourist business is self policing to a degree, people will stop going to see the pyramids if they're continually swamped in too many people. Otherwise they'll just keep going relentlessly. As far as we're concerned Pierre from Paris will spend money on flights, hotels, car hire, restaurants, attractions, theatres, etc, and bring his family..... ... Eric from Ealing will go to London for the day with his missus, use his bus pass and take jellied eel sandwiches I'd guess Sunderland supporters pumped ten times more than Wycombe into the London economy , probably double that.
No one is saying its impossible to come here for EU citizen's. Just not as easy as it was. Bound to have some influence don't you think
I've been to Europe several times since Brexit and haven't noticed a difference. I think the problems are massively overstated by people who would whinge even if it was faster.
