The postmen want to stick to their terms that are more akin to the 1920s than the 2020s. At the same time, they are already on better pay than their competitors who work Sundays and unsocial hours to provide a service that is proving quite resilient in hard times. The Royal Mail lost over £200 million over Christmas 2022 as the postmen refused to work. How can a business recover from such losses when it has no products and is already struggling to compete on price with its rivals? Simple – cut the pay roll. What the Royal Mail should do is tear up all the existing employment contracts of postmen and then offer half of them new contracts at revised terms that will make the business competitive in the industry. Of course, what Royal Mail could do is split the business in two. The parcel delivery business can surely thrive by competing with the likes of DPD and DHL. It can just hand the letter delivering part of the business over to the government to run at a loss until its customer base has dwindled to non-existence and its royal charter is meaningless.
