Tottenham Hotspur host Aston Villa on Monday 21st November in the 12th round of 2011-12 Premier League matches (11th game for Spurs).

The match at White Hart Lane will be the 161st time the two teams have met.

Aston Villa were one of the 12 original members of the Football League in 1888 and Villa's Director, William McGregor, is credited with founding the League. Tottenham Hotspur first met Aston Villa on 11th April 1896 when Spurs were still in the Southern League. The friendly match played at Tottenham Marshes ended with a 3-1 win for Aston Villa.

Three more friendlies were played until the clubs met in anger for the first time in the old Third Round of the FA Cup (today's 5th Round) in March 1903 with Villa winning 3-2.

The first Football League meeting came on 20th November 1909 in the First Division after Spurs had been promoted after their first season of League football. Villa once again won 3-2.

There have been two Wembley matches played between the two clubs.

The first was in the 1971 Football League Cup Final which Spurs won 2-0 with two goals from Martin Chivers - Aston Villa were in the Third Division at the time.

The second game at Wembley came in the 1981 Charity Shield with FA Cup Winners Spurs drawing 2-2 with Football League Champions Aston Villa. Mark Falco scored both Spurs goals and Peter Withe did likewise for Villa.

There have been no Domestic Cup meetings between the two teams during the last 16 years.

The last time they met was in the 5th Round of the League Cup in January 1994 with Villa winning 2-1.

Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and the two clubs, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the only seven ever-present clubs during the competition's 20 season history.

Last season, Spurs did the 'double' over Villa winning both matches 2-1 with Rafael van der Vaart scoring all of Tottenham's four goals. Villa's two goals both came from Marc Albrighton at White Hart Lane in October and Villa Park in December, after Spurs had been reduced to ten men after Jermain Defoe's red card after 27 minutes.

Spurs signed former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the summer on a free transfer. Alan Hutton made a move in the opposite direction and Jermaine Jenas joined Villa on a season's loan.

Monday's game at White Hart Lane will be the 161st match played between the two clubs and Spurs have the slight edge with 63 wins to Villa's 59 with 38 matches having been drawn.

Funnily enough I was at Wembley for both those Villa games, the 2-2 was a cracker, and I sooooooo loved the win in 71, even if it was a less than great performance.

The 71 trip was my first Spurs Cup final at Wembley, 100,000, almost all 'real fans'. At least double the amount that you got in the FA Cup Final in those days. So the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant, probably about 50,000 Spurs in the stadium, the flags, the noise the scarves, the occasion, fantastic.

We'd come so close to going out in the semi-final v Bristol City (went to both legs of that tie) and there we were now, proudly at Wembley again, and continued (at that time) our perfect record of winning every Cup Final we played in.

Going to be a tough one, Bent and Agbonlahor are forming a decent partnership, Agbonlahor's form of late has been deadly and he's arguably the inform striker in the league at the moment. We'll have real trouble stopping him, though hopefully Walker will have studied his movement during his loan stint and hopefully will know how contain him.

We should dominate in the centre of the field - Parker, Modric and Rafa are far better than Petrov and Herd/ Bannan and we should exploit that. Bale against Hutton will be interesting and hopefully Bale will show why we were happy to let Hutton go.

As I said a tough game, but I'm going for 3-1 Spurs providing we bring our "A" game.

Nice thread again THFC6061, always good to read, cheers <ok>

Same for me GH10. Amazing atmosphere - Villa were in the third division then but still brought along a huge following and, on the day, the only real difference between the teams was that we had Martin Chivers - he was in awesome form around then.

Hold the Front Page!!! THFC6061 error shock. No mention of Walker in the "They played for Spurs and Villa" section. My faith in humanity is shattered

The cat's out of the bag. 6061 IS Ian Walker and forgot to put himself down. That's the only reason I can think of for an error from our most thorough of contributors.

I hope Ledley is fit to play, I can't see Bent getting much change out of him. The game itselt, I expect Villa to sit deep, and try and whack us on the break.

The last few times we've played them, they've been so deep that Adele's been rolling in them.

Deliberate mistake to deflect from 6061's omission. Very admirable, Chirpy <applause>

Yep PS, they were a 3rd div team, but still with a first div fanbase. And incredibly 10 years later they won the title and 11 years later the European Cup, until City came along I thought that would be virtually impossible in the Prem era.

Was a great day, and as you rightly say Big Chiv made the difference, as he did in the UEFA final the next year.

My bad, I forgot about KW's loan period and to tell you the the truth, I lost track of "Curtains" Walker after he left.

Last time I saw him he was on the bench for Bolton, I think.
The sight of him smiling after conceding a goal still pisses me off.

Is it wrong to hope a chant gets started, criticising McLeish for never picking Marc Albrighton? It ruined my Fantasy team...until I drafted in Cabaye in his place, anyway...

Ian Walker never seemed the sharpest tool in the box, combined with not being able to save anything anywhere near the top corner made him a bit rubbish really.

That and his habit of coming off the line too quickly, meaning any halfway competent striker would have an easy chance.

Re the Bale v Hutton comment, isn't Hutton on loan and unable to play against us?
