Whilst not absolving the govt from any blame , I do believe that part of the increase figures is down to greedy immoral profiteering . An example - if Aldi , Tesco own brand ( and others ) had tin of beans at app. 40p a year ago and they are still 40p- why are Heinz 80p gone to 120p. Same two ingredients- public need to kick likes of Heinz into touch

The Government need to kick the likes of Heinz, oil companies, energy companies, etc ...

... but how can they when their pals are allowed to get away with .massive profiteering.

They wouldn't want to look like hypocrites <laugh>

You’re right , govt. won’t . We need a public of past years who would say Heinz too expensive we’ll economise and do without. Today it’s I’m not giving anything up , I expect the govt to assist with my chosen expenditure.

Correct. We've got a society who want everything given to them, and if they don't get it, it's everyone else's fault. Decades of easy credit and low interest rates plus the worship of the reality tv celebrity lifestyle. Starting off with a tiny flat or house and working your way up? **** that, I want to go in at massive detached level because I'm entitled to it, and I'll live in my parents' house until someone gives me it.

We're well into the 'good times create weak men, weak men create bad times' phase.

We're creating divisions in society all the time which started with Thatcher. She encouraged people to be selfish, abandon 'dirty jobs' and make millions in banking, insurance, IT, the stock market, etc.

That's all fine but it's lead to people wanting an easy route to big money ...

... and now we've totally lost control of organised crime, internet scams, drug gangs, people trafficking, etc.

Zero hour contracts and uncertainty means people will take the easy way out with benefits. Once petrol/diesel vehicles are banned, and people can't afford new electric replacements, people really will have to get on their bikes or sit at home. It's not even practical to go off working abroad any more in Europe, too much paperwork.

It appears to me, that anyone can raise prices with one slogan.

"Cost of living crisis" without any quibbling we just except it.

My local garage is now selling fuel at £1:39.9, that is almost 60 pence a litre cheaper than the highest price l paid. That has not been past on, while the fuel company's make huge profits which should be dealt with by government. It doesn't stop there for profiteering companies.

I wish I had something to sell . It’s the golden era . Yes I’m charging more - sorry it’s brexit. Sorry , price is up again , it’s covid. Higher again today , no I’m not mentioning my new flash car, it’s obviously the war . Well , customers think this is the norm now so might as well take a bit more for me and call it cost of living .

The term I see being used is Greedflation. It is horrendous what big profit led compaines are doing. Shareholders getting rich, consumers being ripped off. First the pandemic, now the ukraine war, reasons for price hikes. Unfortunately when you look at their P&L it is clear they are making hay. Average profit margins of top 350 ftse companies rose from 5.5% to 10.5% between 2019 and 2022. Mind boggling isnt it. Some senior economists point to this sort of price hiking as still occurring even though base costs are falling. The govt will probably get the blame, but it appears to me to be corproate greed (or as one economist called it - excuseflation) is the problem. The governer of the bank of england encouraged restraint recently. Deaf ears I suspect were listening. Mind you his interest rate policy needs monitoring as he seems to be a bit of a doom merchant. 5 months ago he predicted the longest recession since the 30s. Now recession seems unlikely, in fact the economy is on an upward curve and proving far stronger. Interest rates need to come down to help the recovery go faster, lets see...

One of the millionaires I worked said two of the truest things imo.

Firstly that the only place to get money is from other people.

Secondly that it's easier to take a million pounds from a million poor people than a million pound from a rich man.

Banks, insurance companies, stock market, lottery, etc, all work on the same principle of taxing the poor.

And people who wrongly believe themselves to be rich, or aspire to be rich, admire the truly rich and see themselves as equal ...

... in truth the wealthy wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

As back up to what you are saying, has any of you posters noticed that toothpaste tube now sized at 75ml, since metrication they were 100ml. At the weekend we noticed Aldi, Tesco, and Morrison only done 75ml. Price at the 100ml price the wife was paying.

I agree with all of this, but the government do have the option to tax the corporations properly.

Maybe the only real lever they have. Some companies are very good at minimising taxable profits it seems. I was reading an article recently about the potential impact of windfall taxes. Apparently there are early signs that companies are choosing not to invest as a result of them, and in some cases taking operations overseas. Time will tell on that but it has always been the case that getting the balance right between taxing companies at higher levels and encouraging investment and re-investment is a fine balancing act. I am no expert but suspect it must be almost impossible to get 100% right.

Amazon, Apple, Starbucks and several tech companies make big profits on high turnover, but pay very little tax.
Apparently the EU is looking into it????

    Wtf Brexit

If you notice Apple goods apparently come from Ireland, cos of their low tax rate....

I say apparently cos the goods come straight in from (China?) Only the paperwork is fron Ireland...allegedly.

Surely some bright so and so can figure.put how to tax these companies!

It worries me that we're becoming over reliant on companies who primarily supply things made abroad and employ relatively few British people. The jobs they do provide tend to be low paid and tedious, often filled by immigrants.

Farmers are being pushed into producing low cost crops that are, again, picked and packed by immigrants desperate for any kind of employment.

It's all very well boasting about leading the world with banking, insurance, stocks, etc, but it reminds me of a recent time when France thought itself unassailable with their wine production. After centuries at the top table they've seen it snatched away from them and they'll never recover.

The UK isn't making enough things and ourb jmport/export balance is skewed by the amount of armaments we supply imo ...

... and now our kids will struggle to study and work in Europe, another kick in the teeth which will make us even more introverted.

And seriously this is a question for us all. If America distance themselves from us, as I believe will increasingly happen, who will be our closest friend and ally. Now we've waved flags and rung bells at turning our backs on Europe it won't be anyone there and forget Ireland, both sides distrust us. It'll be the Emirates if the Tories get back in, they already own half of London and seem to do whatever they like as the NUFC takeover shows. Boris Johnson stepped in to wave it through even though it was quite clearly corrupt and shameful. He'd was quite chummy with Russia the fathead, look how that turned out.

Just been mentioned that Rabb funked up at pm question time. Fact Checker advising he said to Rayner that she needed to get her facts right concerning rape prosecutions to thunderous applause... she was correct, rabb the dicks going to have to correct the parliamentary record himself

I cant believe he is still put up for these events to be honest. He never performs and has way too much baggage. And if you are being bettered by Raynor you are in trouble. I think she is a really poor opposition front bencher and generally today she offered nothing to give credence to Labour, in my opinion.
