I know there were more teams in the league, but look at how much more even it was before the money took over...
Two are currently in the old division three, and Oldham are now non-league! Anyone remember Ian Marshall's mullet?
Uncapped Zander Clark and Angus Gunn have been included in Scotland's squad for this month's opening Euro 2024 qualifiers against Cyprus and Spain. First choice goalkeeper Craig Gordon, 40, is injured long term and Clark, 30, has taken Gordon's place at Hearts. Norwich stopper Gunn, 27, committed his international future to Scotland after being capped by England Under-21s.
It's all a bit strange that we were all so down about today's performance, but looking at the table we're still not that far off the playoff places: Millwall lost at home to Huddersfield, Blackburn didn't play, Watford drew at home against Wigan and Sunderland drew with Luton, so our situation has improved overall as we're a point closer to Millwall. It really is a funny old game.
But one (1) shot on target against a lower half side? Plus two draws and a loss against teams we should realistically be beating if we had genuine play off ambitions / credentials?
Stoke are in good form and their table doesnt fully reflect their actual level. We are still shaky and had a lot of injuries - a defensive error free 90 minutes away from home which leaves us closer to the playoffs is not that bad a result overall.
Millwall only managed 3 shots on target in their loss at home to Huddersfield, as did Luton in their draw at Sunderland.
Millwall and Luton are perfect examples of teams who are more than the sum of their parts. At the moment we are the opposite, and I can't see this changing in the near future because Wagner is having to try to work out his best team and formation not in pre-season but during a three-games-a-week schedule. If he had had a month during the World Cup to work with these players, things might look different.
I wouldn’t call it error free, Hanley nearly gifted them a goal with a casual header back which was intercepted, but Gunn saved us. It’s wierd although we have picked up points the last 2 draws have felt like losses
I thought that was a weird one, he sort of let it go, then complained that Gibson didn't shout man on or something to warn him of letting it run through to Gunn. I think we need a settled CB pairing until the end of the season we seem to be chopping and changing a bit over the season which can't help partnerships. Nothing like Fleming and Mackay playing for years together!
However bad we thing the prem is with money look at how bad the Scottish Prem is https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/scottish-premiership/table
Both Rangers and Celtic would both struggle in the English Premier league. They are both average teams and probably mid table Championship level
I agree that they would currently struggle in the premier league, but where do you think they would level out with the English TV money?
Celtic, I suspect, would end up like Everton used to be. A solid seventh or eighth but never looking like a serious contender. Rangers perhaps like current day Everton, narrowly escaping the drop.
If you look at their respective records (in both Scottish and European competitions), Rangers come out marginally on top. So I'm not sure why you think that, after "levelling out with the English TV money" as Zog put it, Rangers would be destined to struggle while Celtic would be comfortably top half. As of 26 February 2023 (Wikipedia) Competition Domestic Rangers Celtic Scottish first-tier League Championships: 55 52 Scottish Cup: 34 40 Scottish League Cup: 27 21 Total 116 113 International European Cup/UEFA Champions League: 0 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1 0 Knockout stage victories: 23 19 (source: The Daily Record) Total 24 20 Aggregated 140 133
I'm maintaining that view. It's going to be a damned close run thing. Don't see us doing better than 6th.
