It’s been a pleasure, watching this young team develop.

This model of bringing in high potential youngsters and established players who have lost their way a bit has the big benefit of reducing the pressure on them.

We’ve seen how crap a lot of our big money signings have been. There was the added pressure on them of living up to the price tag and we overpaid for a lot of signings. I remember us signing Fletcher from Wolves and the fee that we eventually went up to was ridiculous. We’re lightyears away from that now and it’s brilliant.

Granted, there was a buzz about spending big money on signings but the buzz went away very quickly.

Dan Neil is a young lad learning his trade, he gets caught on the ball for one reason, he doesn't just want to play the simple pass every time, he's the one player we have that has it in his locker to play that one pass from the half way line that splits the defence in half.
That pass isn't always on the second he receives it, he needs another couple of seconds to pick out the runners before making the pass..
Yes this is part of his game he needs to work on and know when to just play the simple pass.
If the club suddenly start getting at him for losing the ball and insist he corrects it then he will turn in to many a CM we've had over the years that goes sideways or backwards with a five yard pass just so we keep hold of the ball , problem with that is we create **** all.
I'd like to see the stats on how many forward passes he's made that the move ends in a goal, compared to how many goals we conceded after he's lost possession.
I'd like to bet that it's a much higher % in his favour of a positive outcome.
So as far as I'm concerned Dan carry on playing your game son , you will be a star in the near future

Well - according to quite a few on here.

Did well yesterday, I was pleased for him. He was buzzing at the end of the game, I’m sure he spotted his dad in the away crowd…

Sunderland: Tony Mowbray makes Dan Neil Premier League prediction

TONY Mowbray hopes Sunderland reach the Premier League before current top flight clubs come knocking for Dan Neil.

Mowbray believes it's just a matter of time before Premier League clubs start showing an interest in the midfielder.

The 21-year-old was brilliant as Sunderland got back to winning ways in the Championship with an impressive 1-0 win away at in-form Norwich City on Sunday.

Neil led by example in the middle of the park and Mowbray believes the youngster is destined for the Premier League - hopefully with Sunderland.

"I genuinely think Dan Neil is on a journey which will hopefully with this club take him to the Premier League," said the Sunderland boss.

"If it's not this club and we can't get there fast enough I think the Premier League will phone up about him.

"He's an amazing human being and wants to be a footballer who listens to everything you tell him, who wants to get better, who sits and watches his clips and what he did well and what he didn't do well. He's just a kid on a journey and it's going to be tough to stop him.

"Our job as coaching staff is to help him along, keep making him understand he needs to have both aspects. The best midfield players in my mind, the ones who can do both, have some steel and then look silky and play lovely passes, but then when the ball breaks between him and the other guy, he smashes into the tackle and comes out with the ball.

"Dan is learning those aspects. He's still a young man but somewhere down the line he will become a really good footballer."

For all I love the model of signing young and talented footballers to develop, Patto and Neil are the 2 that I'd really love us to build this club around for the next decade. The rest will come and go, but I hope the club puts a premium on top for homegrown players so it'll take a special offer to drag them away.

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't play for years in the PL. Just hope it happens with us. We'll done Dan.

That’s good news. Far from the finished article but he’s improving all the time and I’m sure he’ll do very well next season after gaining championship experience this year. I still think there’ll be bids for him in the summer mind…
