The Poles were mainly Hurricane pilots. In The Battle of Britain 303 Polish squadron was one of the most successful. Mainly because they closed to within very short range before shooting. Nearly all the others loosed off at long range. The British small calibre ammunition was very ineffective at distance.

Very true that. The New Zealanders took the brunt of it in 11 Group too, mostly engaging the fighters at very short notice, often being ambushed from high altitude out of the sun.
