Troy Parrott hardly set the world alight at Preston has he. If he doesn’t make it at Spurs then that’s not down to the club.
Had a bad injury, to be fair. He was playing well before that. Rumoured to be signing a new deal soon.
Yeah not writing him off but this narrative that Spurs are failing every youngster is tedious and wrong imo.
I think we've done a terrible job in the last few years with virtually all of our youngsters. Skipp is the exception, as we picked a suitable loan for him and he progressed well. Why do you think that the narrative is wrong?
Mourinho wanted Skippy to stay. The lad insisted on the loan and picked Norwich himself. We have been shockingly bad at youth development for some time.
Because it’s so hard for players to go from academy to the first team yet people think it’s as simple as giving youngsters regular minutes which managers can’t really do as it would weaken the first team. I know Edwards and Madueke have gone on to Sporting and Chelsea now but I don’t see that as a failure by the club. There’s also a lot of promising youngsters that leave Spurs that end up rotting in the lower leagues but we never hear that the club was right with them.
He's had one of those awkward loans: a regular starter when PNE were creating about two chances a match so he wasn't scoring before he got injured, and when he came back from injury Preston were much better going forward but he's been in and out of the team If anything, Dane Scarlett's loan is cause for concern given he's gone from a regular starter to somebody who is either on the bench or played as a winger when he does start, which is why there's been a 180 from their fans loving him in the first half of the season to now where there's certainly a section of their fans turning on him for being useless as a LW...which is apparently his problem and not their manager for playing him there
I think that we handled Edwards fairly well and that his failure was his fault. Madueke allegedly left because he couldn't see a route into the first team, though. That's a perfectly understandable opinion for a youth player to have, which is very worrying. I agree that it's not as simple as giving minutes to youngsters. The alternative is them either never progressing or finding sensible loans. Ours have been selected poorly and virtually all have failed. The whole youth set-up needs an overhaul, in my opinion.
On a side note to this, it has been said in the past and has picked up again after Harry Winks brought it up in an interview with the Italian press, we do have a bit of a reputation of not liaising with players who we have loaned out, effectively giving them the silent treatment until they return Obviously there's examples where it makes sense for the club to not be in contact with a player out on loan if we're trying to get shot of them, for example the various loans David Bentley was sent out on, more often than not it's bad form
I read that earlier. Very concerning if it's true. Winks may never play for us again, but he's done nothing wrong and he deserves better. It doesn't bode well for other players with less connection to the club.
Madueke is hardly the only player who left as he couldn't see a route to the first team around that period: Luis Binks, Reo Griffifths and Ismael Azzaoui all bounced around the same time for the exact same reason Griffiths and Azzaoui might be regretting their choices in retrospect, given they pootled around the Lyon and Wolfsburg B teams for ages and little else
I don't think bringing through young players is as difficult as we seem to make it though. If we compare Man U use of Garnacho with our use of Bryan Gil, these are 2 young players who in theory are at a similar place in their development .Ten Haag, uses his player regularly mainly from the bench but he gets time and he has the managers trust, Bryan Gil has to wait until there is literally no choice for the manager but to play him, but he could have played a part in almost every match this season as an impact sub and given an occasional start. Now I understand that different managers have different approaches, but this fundamental to the clubs future and you only have to look across to Arsenal and see that getting young players in the side takes time, but the rewards can be immense.
This is the thing: it's not just academy players who get the short straw, but prospects we've brought in like Gil, Sarr or Foyth which means we're not only stunting the development of players we're developing from scratch, but also ones we've brought in expecting to shine them up to be a longterm starter Even Sanchez can be held up as an example of this, given he was 20 when we signed him (albeit we paid a starting xi fee for him, as opposed to the prospect fees we paid for Foyth or Sarr) and if anything he;s regressed as a player in the last couple of seasons
