I'm not talking about his past. I'm referring to the future and these so called 'top' CL clubs circling. I'd say a top CL club should be making the last 8 if they are truly a 'top' CL club. He ain't going to play at a 'top' CL club in the latter stages of the competition. Are you willing to take that bet? The bet being that he won't leave here and then play in the CL quarters at his next club? Or are you all talk?
Don't be fecking stupid of course I'm not taking your ridiculously one sided wager. Just pointing out how when Junior starts to play half decent you want to raise the bar and remind everyone he's not good enough. Well guess what you're right, he'll only ever be an average PL footballer and will never be considered elite.
Lol. Doc posted saying top CL clubs are circling for Firpo this summer and that some posters might be upset about it. I took that as Firpo is now proving people wrong. I responded by asking who these clubs were and that no true top CL club would come in for Firpo and offered a bet to see if anyone actually believed what Doc was saying. Then you jumped in with yer size 9s and actually ended up backing my point by saying the bet was stupid which was my point entirely. (Although Milky seems to like these bets). So we are all on board then that Firpo to a top CL club is a ridiculous story?
There are countless reports in Italy that Inter Milan want rid of Robin Goosens as he is on loan and not cutting it so want Firpo to replace him. They are in the CL QF now too. So not just one clickbait site quite a few papers reporting this. In my view the head coach Inzagi will be sacked before the end of the season and Conte will take over so all immaterial.
No mate you keep raising the bar for Firpo because you've never liked him as a player. The fact is he was always a decent footballer that just needed time to settle and perhaps more importantly get fit. My own personal view is that he'll never be top class, but it's just an opinion and hopefully he proves me wrong. Didn't you previously say Bamford was the worst striker we'd had in recent times, including the L1 days ? Seems you like to jump all over some of our players without giving them a chance but again that's just my opinion.
That's more opinion than fact Jammy. My personal view was he always looked like he could play with the ball at his feet, but was a car crash defensively. My caveat on him was: we were not an easy team (under Bielsa or marsch) to be a defender in, and the fitness point you raised. I never lost hope in him but had serious doubts about his defensive capabilities (another converted striker/winger!) - a few decent games doesn't change that... it needs to be a clear trend... and he still got roasted a few times at Brighton, though the ball behind Ayling was their option of choice. I think it would be great if he turns things around, its good the fans have warmed to him a bit recently. Let's hope the upward trend continues.
Nope, you're wrong there. When we signed Firpo I actually said it was a good signing as he looked a beast at Betis but he hadn't had a chance at Barca. Then we all saw his performances in the first 18 months at the club. Bielsa dropped him, Marsch dropped him. He's had 3 or 4 games where he's looked OK and 1 good game. That doesn't mean he's suddenly Roberto Carlos. The majority of evidence still suggests he's not been good enough since he signed. I've also commended him on his recent performances but they've been nowhere good enough for him to suddenly be in demand from top clubs. I hope I'm wrong and we sell him for a profit. Regarding Bamford, yes, I don't rate him. Don't think he's good enough at this level. He had one good season when I openly admit he shut me up and gave him the credit he deserved for that. Unfortunately his recent performances haven't been good enough to lead the line. Genuine question for you, if we put Bamford up for sale do you think he'd stay in the PL and who with? I'm thinking Forest might be the only ones to go for him.
@Doc , wasn't saying there weren't any reports of this. More that they are bullshit. Hope I'm wrong and we can make a miraculous profit on him. On another note, sounds like Llorente is coming back to us this summer as he can't get a game at Roma under Jose.
In the discussion yesterday about release clauses i recalled hearing of one for Paddy at a time when he was being bigged up as one of our big name players. I'm sure it was mentioned at £30m or something. If so, do we think anyone would pay that? Eyes were raised when Newcastle paid £25m for Chris wood. Slightly older, similar goal scoring record, different type of player. Paddy actually had a really good half a season first season back in prem, where he had a run of taking chances, his conversation rate then slipped a bit. My take on him is the team normally plays better with him in it, which says something for his work rate and link play. He clearly has talent but i think his brain gets in the way and he freezes/snatches at chances that natural predators put away. Conversely, he'll score some great goals where there's less pressure on a miss. Just my uneducated opinion based on observation.
When Firpo hangs up his boots and he's enjoying a beer and a chat down the pub with his friends & family and they ask " did you ever play in any big games Junior or were you just a journeyman footballer " He can confidently reply that he made 10 Champions League appearances for Barcelona back in the day. Including losing to Bayern Munich in the R16 and the following season being knocked out by PSG again in the R16. It's there in the record books for anyone to check and no one can take it away from him. So my opinion is irrelevant as those are the facts.
When you have time to get off your high horse, you'll realise that i wasn't debating what record warrants the definition of decent footballer... I was pointing out that the bit in bold was opinion "The fact is he was always a decent footballer that just needed time to settle and perhaps more importantly get fit" I'm sure in the pub he won't volunteer the champs league games were as subs, one of them in injury time.
Most footballers find it difficult to play when not fit. Some it enhances their reputation and others, who are maybe the target of the boo-boys. see theirs trashed even further. Plus it's Cheltenham so high horses are de rigueur this week.
