Suffice to say, despite all their whining about how they won the war in the East, and thus were primarily responsible for draining the Nazi war machine, they make little mention that the Nazis would never have been in any position to attack them in June '41 had they not supported them in '39 carving up Poland (look up the Katyn massacre, for instance). Even in '41, in the months before Barbarossa the Soviets were warned repeatedly that Hitler was amassing at their borders, but apart from the fact that Stalin had purged his military of most of his better generals, he chose to disbelieve the reports because he believed he had Von Ribbentrop's assurances of Hitler's good intentions (presumably he never read Mein Kampf). Famines as a weapon against your own population? Yeah, well as with China, the Romans, the Crusades, the *****ls and just about every empire (including our own) that is a feature of history. As a history graduate, I will always say that had the Allied powers allowed Kerensky to surrender from WWI in 1917 and then supported his social democratic revolution then history would have been different. Truth is, we don't know, but we do know there were famines under the Tsars too, so the Russian people were sadly used to them on epic scales. As to why the Russians ended up with most of Eastern Europe - well Churchill fought a losing game at various conferences in '44 and '45 to keep the likes of Chzechovaklia and Hungary, but FDR and then Truman were happy enough to let the Soviets smash themselves to bits against the vicious rump of the Nazi war machine because they were already focussing on the awesome task of taking one Japanese island after another (they had no idea the bomb would even work in late '44, let alone be ready in the summer of '45). After Italy in '43 (Churchill's so-called 'soft underbelly), the US planners and Churchill himself were reticent as to just how much progress and at what rate they'd make through France and the Low Countries after D-Day, despite the urgings of Stalin to throw all they had against it. Don't forget though that the US were actually the first to set foot in Germany proper, weeks before the Soviets crossed the eastern German borders.

Can anyone point to the post where I have ever claimed to be a Socialist? I never have (much to my late father's annoyance). The Labour Party was founded by trade unionists, of which I am a retired one, to agitate and struggle for better conditions and rights for workers in a capitalist society. I believe in capitalism - I have an MBA. In summary, whilst having complimentary policy aspects of some of Corbyn's policies, for example, I believe in free enterprise, a welfare state and individual rights and responsibilities - the post-war consensus, indeed. I make no apologies for claiming the Mail and the Sun have always used Nazi/fascist techniques, especially when it comes to dehumanising trade unions and immigrants (or indeed any opponents) and it's brass-necked for them and their cap-doffing, forelock-tugging supporters to be equally pearl-clutching and faux-offended by nazi labels when they're so quick to throw out their own Communist/Socialist/Stalinist slurs against all who disagree with them. How many hospitals are daddy government going to treat us too ? For every UK resident to be less than 20 minutes walk from a hospital they'll need quite a few . I know you love this Tory government for their commitment to free socialised healthcare but that's a big ask. If you really like hospitals just move near one .
