Funny how so many of the people on this thread that thought that lineker had breached the bbc guidelines on impartiality, then went on to breach the terms of the ‘no politics’ guidelines on this board.

You're mistaken, there's no politics on this thread, much like Yezhov was never in 'that' picture. :emoticon-0100-smile

Snap polling yesterday - think it was youvgov - suggested a big majority 53 - 27% felt the BBC had got it wrong. Writing was on the wall for a return then.

Just playing devils advocate, but could some of that 53% think they got it wrong by not just sacking him?

No problem with lineker back...but all the others who refused to "work" should be sacked,a lot of people rely on ff and radio 5 etc for their football fix,not everyone as sky or BT.....if i refused to work i know what would happen to me and many more like me...

If the BBC felt they legally could dismiss them and that it was in their interest to do so, then surely they would have, but I'm not sure that would have helped them fill their scedules and it would have ended up in a very expensive legal mess. On many fronts.

If the others had been sacked I'm sure Lineker would have quit .

Won't be watching. Sick of all the talking heads.....Shame the BBC didn't seize the opportunity to have a fundamental rethink about the way the programme is presented with too much emphasis on analysis than actual football. Hopefully, they will as soon as Lineker's contract come to an end. But got a feeling the beeb have bottled it.

As MoTD gets an average of 11.6 million viewers across live and iPlayer (it's in the BBC's annual top ten most downloaded programmes on iPlayer), I doubt they've got any desire to see him gone (they made that mistake with Clarkson & Co previously).

One could say they bottled it initially under political pressure.

If like Lineker they are 'freelance' and they declined to work that is their prerogative and up to employers to decide if they wish to use them again...

This is exactly right. It's interesting the way the early covid thread was shut down once it became clear what a piss poor job certain people in power were doing. The no politics rule needs to be applied with common sense. There's no point having a thread about the suspension of Lineker if you can't discuss politics. That said, I don't envy the mods - it's a pretty thankless task. But, in this case, some referral to the politics of the situation needs to be permitted because that is precisely what the debate is about. Otherwise, remove the whole thread.
