Aski Just dug this out from a reliable source .

Can a team sign a player outside of the transfer window and they play if they are a free agent?

The short answer: Yes. It is possible for a player to join a club anytime in a season if he's a free agent.

Therefore if Leeds bought out firminos contract to make him a free agent and bunged liverpool a couple of quid we could get him now

Yes I said in my initial response that we would be allowed to sign free agents. I think I even provided a link to a list of players that are presently free agents and you responded that you wouldnt want to sign any of them ;)

Firmino doesnt become a free agent until 1st July 2023. Any attempts by any club to sign him via whatever method you want to try and bend the rules for would be deemed an illegal approach, and both the clubs involved and probably the player would be subject to sanctions from FIFA, UEFA and the FA

FIFA Rule Number 6 regarding the Status and Transfer of Players states

Players may only be registered during one of the two annual registration periods fixed by the relevant association. Associations may fix different registration periods for their male and female competitions. As an exception to this rule, a professional whose contract has expired prior to the end of a registration period may be registered outside that registration period. Associations are authorised to register such professionals provided due consideration is given to the sporting integrity of the relevant competition. Where a contract has been terminated with just cause, FIFA may take provisional measures in order to avoid abuse, subject to article 22.

Article 22 of the FIFA Players’ Agents Regulations prohibits a player’s agent from approaching any player who is under contract to a club with the aim of persuading him to terminate his contract prematurely or to violate any obligations stipulated in the employment contract. It shall be presumed, unless established to the contrary, that any players’ agent involved in a contractual breach committed by the player without just cause has induced such breach of contract.

The Premier League ruling for the above is as follows :

Out of contract - If a player is out of contract prior to the close of the window he is free to approach and sign for a club outside the transfer window, but the club must gain the approval of the Premier League Board.

Thus any player who was registered with a club in the Premier League when the January transfer window closed (such as Firmino) would not be permitted to sign for another club within the premier league in the same season, and even those who contracts are cancelled during the transfer window, require FA approval to sign for another club once the transfer window has closed

I get that you think the club did not make a great impact in signing a striker to score goals for us in January, I think most on here would probably agree that as a short term solution the club acted poorly, but given our history with the FA I don't think it is very wise to be suggesting the breaking of rules that already exist to counter what you are suggesting, as that would almost certainly guarantee that we would be playing Championship football next season

and I dont disagree with you there Sniffer, the board could have done a lot of things better.

However we have to deal with the here and now, and as much as I admire your attempt to try and think of a solution within this thread, its unfortunately not one that the club could legally do, even if they wanted to :), and given that you asked whether we could do something since the transfer window has closed, I kept my replies in relation to that question, as other than get angry/upset over what has happened in the past, there is nothing I can do to make things any better

I just wonder why we have had to wait so long for 49ers to take over it might work but teams like newcastle went out there and got a massive owner in half the time also , why couldn't we have , also why can't we get a 20 goal a season striker it all comes down to the recruiter Orta he gets some ok like gnoto and raphinia

Well 20 goal a season strikers are very rare, not many premier league clubs have one. Last season only 2 players scored more than 20 league goals in the Premier League, Salah and Son. Season before again only 2 players scored more than 20 league goals, Salah and Kane. Bamford was 4th highest goal scorer that season.

Season we got promoted, 4 players managed to score 20 league goals or more in the Premier League, Vardy, Ings, Sterling and Aubameyang.

Therefore it shouldnt be a surprise that we cant find a 20 league goals a season scorer, 13 other premier league clubs dont have one, and most of those are probably more attractive propositions than ourselves at this present time

You have to have an owner willing to sell. Radz wants to hang on until 2024.

I'm sure Messi would prefer to play for a team playing in Europe, and those teams will be able to pay him more than we could.

But there will be plenty of clubs with a higher spending power than ourselves, who will be able to offer him European football.

Let's say Leeds were in Europe and offered you. £200k per week contract to play for them. Southampton who stayed in the premier League on the last day of the season offer you £300k per week. Who do you sign for?? Given that you are aged about 35 and have been earning somewhere in the region of £10 million per year for the past 10 years. Is money still your main motivation

I would play for Leeds as there is more chance with Leeds to win something than southampton

Hence Messi is likely to sign for a club more likely to win something than ourselves, even if we offer him a larger wage ;)

There’s no real chance of either team winning anything soon unless you’re referring to the championship title next season.
