I suggest you defeat your own argument there. If the working classes were more savvy we would have got rid of the landed gentry years ago. People in Sunderland would not have voted for Brexit because Nissan is their largest employer. People in Hartlepool voting Tory?? Have you seen Hartlepool? 50% of people in Scotland voting to stay with the oppressors? I see no evidence of ,brightness in at least 30% of the population, but don't get me wrong, stupidity is not confined to one class it just has greater consequences for the working class, because the other lot just hang on to what they have.

The BBC has long since confused the terms 'national broadcaster' with 'state broadcaster'.
There is an argument that their direction always reflects the Gov of the day, be that Tory or Lab. But as Tories have held power for 31 of the last 44 years, the opportunities for the Right to influence direction have been far greater.

Personally, I think the traditional model for the BBC is unsustainable, either financially or credibly as an independent voice.

Is there even a place for a 'BBC' anymore? Non-News programme content is generally from external providers / companies, sports coverage is greatly reduced and much of that is bought-in or reliant on third party technical support (eg Sky cameras etc)

A subscription model holds great risk to even the ever-decreasing reputation - there are other malign influencers beyond the current regime. (Although, contrary to the US & Murdoch's Fox News experience, I would suggest that Sky News provides a more balanced news coverage for the UK & Ireland.)

Really not sure what the answer is, but listening to the witterings of the former DG Mark Thompson on Kuenssberg to his am and the puerile Bollox coming from Davie and Sharpe, the one thing for sure is that Auntie Beeb us not safe in their hands! <doh>

It's not all to do with savvyness. In surveys around of one third of the population admit to being racist. Over recent years Tory policies have pandered to those people. I was certainly working class at birth but by luck I was educated well and understand things differently. But 20% of the population are not very clever and easily led. Better education is the solution.

It’s down to so many identifying with the rise in English (not British) nationalism for some reason. I can’t understand why people who see deprivation and poverty around them, see dysfunctional public services and have no reason to believe that this country has any meaningful political and economic power in the world, hark back to days of Empire, taking pride and joy in some deluded notion that the opposite is in fact the case or will be. But it’s not that simple. It’s been a great achievement for the Tories that they can offer these people absolutely nothing, yet have them willing to buy into the idea that they live in great country, superior to all others, which can now thrive because we’ve ditched the EU and are keeping immigration at bay. There is nothing tangible to support them, but they’ve been convinced of its truth. So they have been willing to trade the economic security and many of the rights (the U.K. was a forefront of establishing) which membership of the EU brought for….er… well, I’m sure someone will tell me what the benefits are!
But you can’t oppose nationalism because that’s unpatriotic. The government is patriotic because it’s handed power back to the people so it can make laws which are best for the U.K. Their immigration policies are for the good of the country. The good of the people whose patriotism says that immigration is bad. So you can’t criticise the government unless you’re unpatriotic. The BBC has to be impartial on this - which means not criticising the government. Being impartial apparently means cowtowing to government whatever they do and showing no dissent whatsoever.
Which brings me back to Lineker….
