Is anyone really influenced by Gary Lineker and have changed their views on immigration, seriously? The BBC are condemning the nation as 'thick as pigshiit' if they believe they are tbh. I've noticed some posters, in debates like these, believe they're intellectually above the general public who are just droves of hapless gullible fools who follow any notion as long as its 'a celebrity' voicing it. Yet when the same fools vote for a cause these posters believe in, whether it's the Tory party, Brexit, whatever, then they're suddenly sensible logical people voting in a democracy.
The thing is...they might just be his opinions but to put it out there on his social media is surely with the aim of trying to influence some people. He's a smug tw*t and imo opinion should be saying to all his cronies who have stood down to back him that he thanks them for their support but MOTD is bigger than him and needs to carry on.
Is asking someone to think before they post a reference to people they disagree with being Nazis coercion? I mean, that's something most decent people should be doing without being asked.
Dion Dublin will not be presenting MoTD next week either as he is looking at a three bed semi in Dudley ...
Or he could just be doing what everyone else on Twitter is doing and sounding off for their own benefit. How many minds do you really believe he'll change? I don't use Twitter, Facebook, whatever but I'd guess most people's opinions are as intransigent as they are on here. Or do you believe other people are gullible dopes who have their views formed by the likes of Lineker?
You're right. I dont like the bbc, lineker, or the Tories. Really dont want to be on anybody's 'side's Could the beeb not just have said twitter is for sixth former type smart arses, we dont bother with it.
Aye it’s been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights, the UN and members of the Church. But it’s Gary Lineker that has the biggest influence… All it’s done is being more focus onto the bill to people who would otherwise not take any notice of politics, and that has prompted people to look into it and make up their own minds. Which is why the government has kicked off.
And that's the end of the debate imo, well said. I expect people who use Twitter etc greatly overestimate it's importance and influence.
Leicester fans holding up pro Lineker, pro immigration signs. I wish people will clarify that there is a huge difference between being anti immigration and anti illegal immigration. I'm against people funding criminals and risking the lives of themselves and their children by breaking the law and entering any country illegally. I am pro immigration. I am happy with passing any law which may save lives and hit criminals in the pocket.
So, in that sense, Gary Lineker has had more influence because how many people pay that much attention to what the UN or The European Court of Human Rights say on a daily basis. As far as I can see its not that he criticised it that's the problem but the analogy he used. Accusing people of being like the Nazis, whether directly or implicitly, is generally frowned upon. I think if he'd left it at his initial tweet of "this is disgusting" people would have agreed. I've seen some interesting debate amongst the Jewish community on Twitter, many of whom agree with him, but there are some who while agreeing don't like the analogy.
Exactly marra, win win all this ****e,potentially get rid of smug Lineker, rid of the BBC tax (licence)
Yep. Five minutes of reflection and a slight reword, the same message would have gotten across and none of this would be happening. But no, it's the now practically Pavlovian 'NAZIS!' response to anything they don't disagree with. Usually by people who can't give you anything but a surface level understanding of the actual Nazis. If they knew anything more than the basics they'd think twice about making that kind of comparison. If Dan Snow had tweeted exactly that I'd think he knows what he's talking about. Lineker though, he probably gets his information from Indiana Jones films.
Problem being however a lot of these illegal immigrants are asylum seekers have left their homes and lives behind out of fear and persecution. While govt rhetoric sounds tough to us it’s little deterrent compared to what they left behind. Parents will willingly sacrifice themselves so their children can grow up safely in another country. The small boats thing is a terrible tragedy in the numbers that are being exploited and die at sea. I just don’t think the law changes will make the slightest bit difference. Targeting the criminal gangs is the way to make the difference. Still not worked out why anyone is worried about a sports presenters impartiality. He’s never converted me into a Leicester City fan yet and I’ll happily buy McCoys over Walkers any day (now off to google if they’re made by same company).
Imagine being converted into a Leicester City fan. He's got to be stopped, that's the next step in his plan
The BBC has been forced to severely reduce a second day of sports programming amid a deepening row over the suspension of Gary Lineker. The corporation said Match of the Day 2 and coverage of the Women’s Super League match between Manchester United and Chelsea would be “much reduced” on Sunday.
I do feel a bit sorry for those adjacent to the issue caught in the crossfire here. Reluctant protesters now fearing for their jobs. Lineker saying 'you've made your point, now please go back to work' would go a long way to patching things up here I think.
