Ukraine was a bit different as I believe there were provided ways to get to each countries by flight? Although I may be mistaken and happy to be corrected.
Tbh it's the fact they are treated different is the problem I have. If all refugees regardless of where they're from had the same opportunity to apply for asylum then fair enough. I just think it's wrong that some are given more favourable terms than others and it does reek a bit of racism. I've no problem with those who are trying to work the system for the wrong reasons being declined and so they should be. I remember an article by Daniel Hannon when the Ukraine war broke out in which he said we should welcome Ukranian refugees with open arms unlike those from Syria etc because "they looked more like us".
Don’t totally disagree. Think it’s like anything, prob somewhere in middle really. I’m sure a lot come here because they really need to and obviously have a reason to come to uk. However, obviously lots who do come here who don’t really need to and some kind of criminality behind it. How do you ensure those that need to can come while also keeping those that don’t need to away? Like anything in life, those with bad intentions ruin it for everyone else
I can't say for sure but as I mentioned earlier, I think if you put processing centres in France and then also allow people to claim asylum abroad in other countries, that will ensure bonafide refugees come and the chancers are kept out. Also, public support will be much more behind the government because then anyone can argue, 'if they are legitimate they should be using the legal channels as they are readily available'. Because tbh this divide and rule ****e we're seeing at the moment is toxic and the tories seem to revel in it. We need policies that bring ppl together not pull us apart. The past 7 yrs has been the worst in my lifetime for it and it's tragic. If they're processed in France, or in neighbouring countries (where 75% of refugees tend to settle btw) we don't have to worry about processing them here, or sending them to Rwanda , or pay for hotels, or detention centres, and all the other ****e. Just a suggestion like
Not sure that is correct since part of their guidelines are certain well known staff who are closely associated with the BBC are covered by their impartiality rules.
and how many examples are there of the BBC deciding that a personal comment not on BBC airwaves is not covered under guidelines? again, I'd the BBC can produce a contract stating that Lineker or anyone else signed away their right to free speed then fair enough but I'm fairly sure they won't be able to as it'd be counter to law. the only way a guideline apples if if the tweet in question was made on official BBC channels and even then the right to replay would come into effect rather than removal of staff. it's not like Lineker said kill the immigrants or wrote hate speed that would be a crime under the actual law is it?
Free speed , and any other drug of choice, for TV presenters. Let us start a petition. Remember Lindsay Buckingham, of Fleetwood Mac, turning up for a stadium gig in USA, part of the group's contract stated a bowl of cocaine would be available for the group to use within the dressing room, it was not there. He famously said "No snow, no show" and would not preform until a load of coke was found.
I would think that all the contract needs to say is that if the BBC guidelines on impartiality apply you must abide by them .
And if you said the pm is a very naughty boy would you expect to be sacked? Or would you expect to have a case for wrongful dismissal if they tried it?
I note one of biggest dickheads going, Chris Sutton has proved it once more by being the one scab. Shocked? Nope
well i wouldn't have been stupid enough to have used my real name while implying the Govt are Nazis so no i wouldn't have been sacked . though on the one forum that i used where you could have worked out who i was employed by i kept all my posts on "delicate" subjects to pure factual info / guidance .
LFC Women beat Spurs Women 2-1 today, with Bo Kearns scoring the winner. Big win that takes us away from relegation possibilities.
The vast majority do stay in mainland Europe. Many who come, do so because they already have family here or speak English. Many are fleeing Afghanistan, Syria, Iran etc, war torn countries. About 70% of asylum applications are agreed, because they are genuine. In spit of what some are saying, Albanians aren't the majority and there is already a deal with Albania to return them.
Lineker wins: the tweet he nails the bbc and tories with on his return "However difficult the last few days have been, it simply doesn't compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. "It's heart-warming to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you. "We remain a country of predominantly tolerant, welcoming and generous people." We will see who gets fired over this; i strongly suspect a snow job will be done and at end of season lineker and a few others will be packed off to wherever they would like to go and a new MOTD team will be in place in august.
I don't see it that way, I see them as having been intimidated. Tories have traditionally accused the BBC of being a bunch of lefties. They don't take kindly to any criticism, and successive Tory governments have waged a war of attrition on its impartiality, culminating in Dorries' intention to have the TV licence abolished. She's softened her absolutist stance on this, but I think the threat was a stick used to beat the BBC into being more submissive. I'd support any action to prevent the government meddling in the BBC, despite being very disappointed in the way it's gone downhill for a while now. There needs to be someone influential to oppose the outlets run by the self-serving right-wing media barons, and heavily influenced by the advertising income of global conglomerates.
To be fair, I think governments of both sides have not liked the BBC, as it's their job to ask critical questions and governments don't like that. But the attacks on the BBC have significantly increased in particular since the Brexit vote, with the proloferation of online memes decrying the BBC as fake news and now of being too woke, the constant threat of cutting the licence fee if they don't provide more favourable coverage, the appointment of a personally connected favourable person as chairman, the threats to privatise the obviously left-wing Channel 4 and now the whole Lineker affair all having very sinister undertones.
