This is weird. I hadn’t heard this song for years - almost half a lifetime - to the point where I’d forgotten about it. Then it was playing in a shop I was in last week. I thought I know this but couldn’t place it, so I Shazammed it and it was Positively 4th Street. I’ve been playing it ever since and lo and behold it pops up here! Excellent choice for a brilliant song !
I posted that last night....saying it reminded me of something else. Well, I played it to the missus today and she got it straight away. Apologies for posting this monstrosity, but this is where I know it from. She played this album on repeat for bloody weeks. Again, sorry for this.....
Currently moving into the new place and getting my priorities right. We're using the packing boxes as coffee tables and bedside cabinets but rigged up the Sonos to the TV and had a music night on window rattling volume. We voted this the winner
I love that description of the song Smug. A lot of the people around the music scene at the time think the subject of Dylan's hate/anger is Izzy Young, including Izzy Young himself. I hope not because Young played a massive part in discovering Dylan, getting him work around Greenwich Village and his first CBS recording deal.
Bit late in posting this, seen as it's now not St. Patrick's Day. I had loads of songs lined up....starting with this beauty.
Wonderful .... pure and joyous, I had a fabulous night at Rock City with them. Anyone who can't appreciate it for what it is must be quite narrow minded imo. Not technically brilliant or perfectly performed ... ... just music as it should be.
This song is a really contentious issue with me and my family, to the extent I wouldn't want to play it at a gathering. I understand why, I really do, but for me the sheer musicianship and sincerity overrides the historical divide and political message. If I was born into that world would I be any different, I doubt it. What I love most about the video are the hideously embarrassing middle class English trying to join in ... ... absolutely cringing and an object lesson in why you should never try to be 'one of the lads' if you're obviously not.
What I love about this acoustic version is that the bloke obviously has the trust and respect of all these young lads. The harmonies are brilliant and, if you open your heart, wonderful to sing as loud as you can. It's amazing that we can all sing if only we can get over the embarrassment factor.
