He only said the kind of language being used, by Sunac and Braverman, wasn't dissimilar to the kind of language that was being used in pre-war Germany. He didn't say the actions of this Government were the same as the Nazis ... ... in fact he doesn't even mention the Nazis or that the actions or language was directly comparable.
But the implication is clear. He would be splitting hairs if he used that to excuse himself. Given context and timing, he can only be referring to Nazi racial policy. He's clearly not talking about the politics of the Weimar Constitution.
He clearly said the kind of language being used isn't dissimilar. I'm sure he was referring to the Nazis pre-war and I've no doubt he knew exactly what he was saying. He specifically referred to a time when the Nazis were primarily a political party using rhetoric to whip people up against a specific group of people. That's the comparison and hs not even saying its a direct one, just not dissimilar ... ... it's the tone and language he's comparing. BTW, there were other political parties, in 1930's Germany, all using similar language to polarise opinion and whip up hatred. The Nazis were just one of many. Rooch: As above mate, not ignoring you.
This is another example of someone saying the language isn't dissimilar, just like Lineker. Although she actually says 'Nazis during the war'. "Joan Salter, 83, said "Joan Salter, 83, said language over migration was akin to what the Nazis used to justify murdering her family Braverman was confronted by Joan Salter, 83, during a meeting in her Fareham constituency in Hampshire on Friday evening. Salter, who has been recognised with an MBE for her work on Holocaust education, likened Braverman’s rhetoric on migrants attempting to cross the Channel to that used by the Nazis during the second world war." to justify murdering her family Braverman was confronted by Joan Salter, 83, during a meeting in her Fareham constituency in Hampshire on Friday evening. Salter, who has been recognised with an MBE for her work on Holocaust education, likened Braverman’s rhetoric on migrants attempting to cross the Channel to that used by the Nazis during the second world war."
not sure what numbers you mean by 'large' or 'many' , but I very much doubt any sizeable number of people will be influenced by anything Gary Lineker would say, ever.
From the point of view that the language used can be seen to demonise the outsider or the other and is therefore nationalistic, there is a comparison to be made. There have been other Nationalist regimes (and even some nominally Communist ones) before and since that have also used similar types of language though. I would imagine his invocation of the Nazis was deliberate though and it remains disproportionate and divisive. There certainly were other parties doing similar things in 30s Germany and there was also a strong Communist party. The Nazis just came out on top. Nationalist feeling and antisemitism were deep rooted and long-held. Was a significant part of my PhD/MPhil research.
I notice that anyone who speaks about migrants always miss illegal off. Legal migrants have always been welcomed.
Exactly, he's not a respected political commentator. This wasn't an in depth statement in the Times ... ... just a Tweet from a football personality. Having said that, he's succeeded in pushing Braverman into responding ... ... bit of an OG imo.
You've seen the rise of 'influencers' on social media? People will buy into the views of anything they see on the Internet if it comes from someone they identify with. Fairly well observed phenomenon. This is just an excuse to absolve people of saying daft things on the Internet.
I'm certain he knew people would automatically think 'Nazis' ... ... answering Braverman's fire with fire imo. Braverman saying 'stopping this 'invasion' was her dream' was her Mein Kampf moment. A really stupid thing to say but she has form.
Yeah, like I said, he wouldn't be wrong in identifying Braverman's rhetoric as nationalistic. Making implications about the Nazis is disproportionate. Its the same thing playing out again- one side takes a step away from the centre ground so the opposite side takes a bigger step away.
It was extreme to be fair, but not dissimilar to the tone Braverman regularly uses and she should know better. Having thought about it I'm not sure if I could come up with a better comparison. The Nazis initially came to power primarily using rhetoric whereas other possible examples used brute force first ... ... The Romans or Vikings wouldn't work as well if you wanted to make a comparison. Therefore it's clearly the language Lineker is comparing. Having said that Braverman has created concentration camps, sent in the Royal Navy and promised to fight them on the beaches
nah, to all but the hard of thinking, these 'people' are just background noise, you'd have to be pretty desperate to be 'influenced' by anything they spout, despite their job description.
Or Sunak knows the proposed policy will not work legally or practically. But allows him to paint Starmer as a liberal leftie lawyer for the general election next year.
