Gallardo would be an interesting and intriguing risk. Smashed it in South America so could he bring his success to Europe? It’s probably a bit cliched but he’d either be sacked within 3 months or go on and achieve something spectacular, doubt you’d get anything in the middle.
Well at least neither Lampard or Gerrard get a mention!! As a left field suggestion Carrick is doing very well at Middlesborough, though its probably still too soon for him.
I completely agree with you, but what names would excite you? I can't think of any, honestly. Maybe it's just me being jaded or something.
Yeah probably the same. Its too big a job for any manager right now. The squad needs a massive overhaul and some of Spurs rivals have unlimited funds.
Do they have to excite you ?? I think my opinions of Pochettino was that he had done a good job at Soton, and perhaps could bring a BMJ/Arry style of play + on-pitch progression. I never thought we would get 2015/16 + 2016/17, or CL 2018-19, as soon as he did.
Pochettino makes no sense on both sides for me. From a spurs point of view: Failed to get us over the line and win a trophy. Said before the CL final he might leave. Picked Kane to start in CL final even though he hadn't played in 3 months due to injury. (In fairness he was damned either way if we didn't win). Continually picked Rose and Dele when they were clearly out of form. Chose some terrible players (Ndombele, Lo Celso, Sessegnon and Sanchez) From Pochettino's point of view: Not given the players he wanted. Given 3rd or 4th choices as signings. Sacked 3 months after getting us to the CL final, and getting us into the CL 4 years running. Not going to be very different this time round. Doesn't like a DoF system. Will end in tears very quickly if it happens imho
Love Poch but his reaction after the semi final win against Ajax disappointed me massively. Crying and then saying he would leave if they won it was not the sort of thing any too manager would say. Imo he never recovered from that emotionally and I think some of that attitude rubbed off on the players. The only time to celebrate and cry is when the trophy is won.
Galtier is a guy I was suggesting a couple of summers ago, especially that summer given he won the league as Lille and then stepped down - meaning we could've brought him in sometime in early June, instead of bringing in Nuno at the end of June It does have to be said that Galtier also would fit with the personnel we have available, given his teams use fullbacks/wingbacks to move the ball forwards and he is using 3ATM at PSH (although he preferred 4231 or 433 at St Etienne, Lille, Nice) but the key difference is once the ball is in the final third it switches centrally for a throughball instead of expecting the FBs/WBs to do all the heavy lifting, which given the iffy nature of our WBs'es' crossing is an improvement The best way to describe Galtier;s football is sort of like what we saw out of Stellini for a few games: pragmatic in shape, but fluid in movement
Ally McCoist and Laura Woods say that Thomas Tuchel would be a better fit than bringing back Poch Thomas "Falls Out With Club Boards As Standard" Tuchel would be a good fit? Are you sure?
It’s a pretty spot on analysis of our tactical situation to be honest. The style of play we are currently trying to play requires a far higher consistency of execution that we are currently producing at either end of the pitch and that’s affecting results and excitement because we’re not even getting the good counterattacks that have been our hallmark over the last few years.
The interesting part is that Cruyff quote about football matches being won by the team who make the fewest mistakes, which is pertinent due to how many of our poor results do seem to come off the back of individual errors, and the fact that so many of these are from players in the worst positions to make mistakes (both GKs have dropped a few clangers, while of our CBs Dier, Tanganga and Sanchez have repeatedly made grave errors) which is undermining Conte's entire setup One thing the vid touched on but could've gone into more detail is how we manage to fall between two stools against both teams which attack and teams who play busparquet: against teams who attack our counter isn't effective enough to punish them, but against teams who sit back we're lacking somebody who can open up teams with a single pass or run, hence we're always taking 2-3-4 passes more than we need to when crossing the halfway line
Exactly. We’re not good enough at defending to rely on the counter and we don’t have the ball players, especially with Son very off form and Kulu not quite looking like himself, to break down teams when we have sustained possession. At the turn of the new year (I think the palace game) I thought we saw the green shoots of what it could look like - the front 3 playing close together, threatening a chance through the middle via a quick interchange or threatening to get a WB in space from an overload out wide and look for a cutback that would be a higher-percentage chance than a normal cross. But we haven’t managed to replicate that approach since, really. And mistakes at both ends of the pitch are hamstringing us.
In terms of the counter, that clip from the NLD they show sums it up: by the time we were in the opposition third we had Kane and Son in the box and Sessegnon making a cross, yet they already had a good 3-4 players back in their own box even before Sess' cross was about as threatening as Andrew Taint challenging me to see who can count to ten the fastest, which suggests that either Arsenal's defence have 2-3 yards of pace on our forwards or our speed in transition is not fast enough to be an effective counterattacking team
