The fact that when there is a shortage the suppliers sell what they have to their nearest markets (not us) is immaterial. The fact that selling things to us has been made harder as a punishment for Brexit is the EU’s problem – punishing their own members when we run a trade deficit with them. If they want a trade war they can have it. I wonder which of the European economies will have the biggest recession. They had best hope that it is not Germany because they are the ones paying all the bills for the hopelessly indebted Mediterranean countries.

I bought some oranges in Tesco the other day. I could have bought a net of five Spanish oranges for £1.50 or I could buy single South African oranges for 30p each. The South African oranges were bigger, so I bought them. If I had been in an EU country, the South African oranges would have been more expensive because of EU tariffs imposed on imports to protect European growers. Perhaps we should source more of our seasonal produce in Africa and leave the EU ship to continue to sink as they punish us for getting off.
