RIP the voice of football commentary from my childhood.

Am I mistaken but did he always have a soft spot for Town?Perhaps some family connection?

Quite possibly, BigAl he always supported the smaller clubs playing well above their level. And I am sure a good pre- match lunch with the Cobbold family helped!

A total legend, in the days when footie wasnt covered by daily tv he captured so many wonderful footballing epic matches live on radio, and his infectious boyish enthusiasm as well as his amazing knowledge, brought an unforgettable reign on the radio to a huge worldwide audience. Rip Motty, you will be missed.

Quite right Redruth! I quote from the Ipswich Star. He was Suffolk thru and thru.

"During the late 1970s Motson wrote a collumn for the Ipswich Town matchday programme.

Ipswich Town Football Club has paid tribute to Motson.

In a tweet they said: "An icon in football media and the sport as a whole.

Motson had many connections with Suffolk as he regulary turned up to events in the county whether they were football related or not.

After the 1978 FA Cup final he returned back to Suffolk to cover Town's victory over Arsenal.

In 1980 he joined then Town boss Bobby Robson in a charity match at the end of Robson's testimonial season at the club.

And when the club was facing financial problems in the pre-Marcus Evans days of the early 2000s he showed his support by buying a few shares in Ipswich Town"

I read he went to School in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich was the first football game he saw live. He also invested in shares when we went into administration in 2003

    RIP
