Sir Tony Blair and Lord Hague have joined forces to urge the government to roll out "digital ID" as part of a "fundamental reshaping of the state around technology".

Their plan would involve a new ID incorporating details such as a passport, driving licence, tax records, qualifications and right-to-work status which could be stored on a mobile phone.

The former political rivals said the challenge of adapting to the new technological revolution meant putting party differences to one side.

Sir Tony was the Labour prime minister when Lord Hague led the Conservative party as the Opposition and the pair had many clashes at the despatch box.

"We both believe the challenge is so urgent, the danger of falling behind so great and the opportunities so exciting that a new sense of national purpose across political dividing lines is needed," the pair said in a joint article for The Times.

    No no no!

    Falling behind what?

Apparently, we can solve problems with productivity, the NHS, and climate change by everyone having ID cards. <laugh>

Oh and Estonia and India are way ahead with this. India... a country where only 7% of the population have a passport, that India!

And there's nowt wrong with what Indians (and indeed Americans) are demonstrating - it's about having free choice. If you want a passport, you have one, if you don't need or want one you don't have one.

The idea that to be able to function at any level - income, health, education, finances, lifestyle, you are forced to have it all linked/shared on one digital ID, and you can no longer separate one from the other, is just plain wrong. Now, that IS a restriction of liberty and personal freedom imo.

A mobile phone that could get "lost"or stolen with every single piece of your information on it that could be unlocked by a hacker, REALLY

Blair should be rotting in Jail and Hague should now be certified as insane

I'd probably trust the crook who steals it more than the ppl who'll have access to it all legitimately.

    Both need hanging

I know we don’t as a people like admitting it because we are extremely comfy with our zombie like state of existence but we need a revolution.

Not a first world revolution: sign petitions

we need a third world revolution: drag these fcks out of their houses and hang the ****s ourselves…smash up the pigs that get in the way

maybe after Love Island finishes eh

So what do they know that concerns them so much they feel we need to have a comprehensive ID system. Tony Blair is 69 years old now, he should be retired and I think looks even older than that, he looks more like a ghoul with something on his mind, he's probably scared that as death approaches he will have to meet his maker for the thousands he sent to an early grave - so as Trebs says, I'd rather trust the thief, than those with legit access to our data.

I think what needs to change in the world, is to stop people over a certain age having any sort of power or influence on society, because they quite simply cannot be trusted as their own lives draw to a close. Anyone that has seen Biden recently, can tell he's away with the fairies, he's literally being propped up by the people around him - Trump another ageing lunatic, Blair should be in prison. Putin is probably the most sane of that lot and he's gone full on tonto.

    Morning everyone.

It's a changing world and things are getting worse at every level. I say this bcos there was a time when I trusted statesman and women more AFTER they left public office, bcos generally they had no personal ambitions OR the contraints of 'playing politics' which they do when they're MP' or political leaders. But now it seems they're further corrupted after they leave office and you can't trust a single one of them.

Btw wtf is Blair doing banging on about this, wasn't he supposed to have gone off and sorted out the middle-east peace process to try and redeem himself from the many whose blood he has on his hands from that region? Oh yeh, I guess starting conflicts and mass subjugation is easier than ending it. ****.

I can only guess, because I've not looked up any material on the ID system, nor did I see Blair's comments - my guess is that it is a long term project, not just that of the UK but the whole of the EU, hence why Blairs fingers are in the pie. In the perfect world, I probably wouldn't knock the idea, but as I trust no fooker, I do not trust them with this neither.

There seems to a lot of emphasis, particularly in media to control even how people think now, Shamima Begum one example, who I have always maintained was groomed. Then the SNP woman pushing to be the next first minister of Scotland, who had her religious beliefs disected on trial by TV, maybe she should have just lied. The Labour woman from Canterbury, who dared suggest that men cannot have vaginas, who was villified by messages of hate.

    Crazy.

I didn't say 'every event', I said every major event, which you most definitely do.

You need to learn to read things carefully Aber, it's important or you'll just be factually incorrect ;)

I don't like the fact it's going to be compulsory. And even if it wasn't, they'd make sure you couldn't function in society without it - as each thing would be tied to every other thing. For that reason, I can't even see myself approving of it in a perfect world tbh bcos it's about restricting ppl's freedoms.
