That was pretty much the 'unspoken' opinion in my house too. ITV was the new kid on the block in the '60's so probably viewed with suspicion against the establishment BBC. How times have changed.....
BBC 2 was banned in ours , it was some sort of hippy/commie/ catholic/Jesuit plot with a touch of fascism thrown in for good measure, my dad was a very reasonable man , he also had a pathological hatred of Terry Scott who he went to school with apparently
BBC for sport for me. Now I never watch BBC. Murray Walker in his early days commented on motorbike scrambling, which I used to call Arthur Lampkin's half hour because he won every race. Also hill climbs with drivers bouncing up and down in their cars to get grip Then a car cross country with Land rovers and Swedish trucks that I can't remember the names of. Then later Truck racing, that was unbeliveable 100mph lorries.
Apart from the wonderful 'My Brother', I agree with your dad about Terry Scott. BBC2 was MASH, Monty Python, Pete & Dud, Spike Milligan...and all watched upstairs on a 7" square telly my brother wangled somehow. Also, there was a slight chance of some naughty partial nudity....like Kate Nelligan in Therese Raquin.
Totally agree, I had a TV that one of my uncles was throwing out , I could get bbc2 if I used a coat hanger and a bit of string to hang it out the bedroom window, also had a garden cane to change channel quickly if I heard him coming up the stairs
I was a part time mechanic for a small time truck racing team in the early days, then big money got involved which took it away from the small fry, those trucks were brutal to drive
MASH was a fabulous programme, fortunately Dad liked it, with only 1 TV in the house he chose what we watched. Fortunately he loved Pete and Dud too, Pete being an exceptional Jazz pianist helped on that score. He was also a huge Goons fan he used to go to the recordings so Spike was good for him too. Python was on a bit late for me originally, I have whole series on DVD and where its funny its both ground breaking and hilarious, the funny sketches are truly iconic but those bits re few and far between when you look at the series in its entirety.
Dan Walker got a little messed up, won’t post his strange ambulance selfies but he got hit by a car whilst on his bike. Sounds like he was KO’d from the impact but luckily for him nothing broken, just battered and bruised.
