I say it quite a lot but too many people equate the quality of the performance to the end result. If Pelkas controls the ball, he's clean through after a minute. If Pelkas plays a simple 5 yard pass to Oscar we score, and if Doch has some composure he probably scores too. I think these games are really starting to show our flaws and who's not up to it.
stats dont paint the full picture but i do find it interesting that for slater key passes - 22 2nd most in the team assists - 2 2nd most in the team forward passes - 93 - 4th most in team touches in attacking third - 373 - 2nd most in team successfull dribbles past an opponent - 22 - 2nd most in team forward runs with the ball - 40 - 2nd in overall team
Do that stats per 90 mins and bring the results up. He's played 1000 more minutes than Doch, Tufan, Woods and Longman and 1500 more than Pelkas so judging them off the same parameters is unfair.
I don't know if it's about the personnel to be honest. Pelkas has ability beyond most players at this level but he didn't do it in those moments. You look at teams who overachieve at this level with a limited squad and a big part of it is being ruthless and clinical. I suppose it comes from confidence and becomes a good habit. When Pelkas messed that touch up in the first minute I just had a sense that no one thought it was a big deal, in the stands or on the pitch. It was like everyone thought "It's only the first minute, we'll get more chances" but inevitably you always come to regret them later on. I think you need to have that attitude that every chance is crucial, and the belief that you'll finish it.
I think it definitely has to do with personnel. Pelkas does have a tonne of ability but 2 goals and 1 assist in 17 games is nothing to write home about. For a player of his ability, it's really poor. Yesterday was just a continuation of that I think pace is massive at this level. And we don't have anywhere near enough of it. When Allahyar's fit, he scares the crap out of the opposition but with him out and Connolly out, we don't have any really.
It's as clear as day how Rosenior has sorted us out defensively and in our general organisation in our own half. On the other hand, I see nothing remotely similar in terms of our attacking game, in our passages of play in the opponents half. Ok, yes, he's had injuries, suspensions, new signings, whatever to contend with, but you'd think by now we would be seeing clear signs of development / improvement / tactics etc in relation to our attacking play, be it in open play or set pieces. I just don't see it and it leaves me wondering if that's where Rosenior is lacking? TWT.
unfair? it's a stat, it's neither fair or unfair slater has played a lot hence why i referenced some of his stat
His minutes completely skew the stats though. He's played more minutes than anyone. So if you change the baseline to per 90 mins, which is a much fairer baseline, you can have an actual reflection of how good he is statistically in comparison to his peers. Here's his key passes metric when you do it as a total. He's 4th with 22 key passes. Seems decent. Then when you switch it per 90 mins, he drops to 16th which is crap.
but then again the more you play the harder it is to keep a higher average, if they all had equal minutes, im sure others wouldn't be as high did slater player in more games when we were poor? did slaters position move there's so many correlations and causations that someone who gets paid to truly delve into the performance analytics can tuck into it anyway my whole point was, that slater does play and he's amongst our highest attacking threats, whether he would if he played less is irrelevant to the discussion maybe rosenior won't start him much from now, who knows but he has been playing
Despite not winning yesterday, I actually quite enjoyed it. There was intent from both teams to score, both sides were pushing but the quality didn’t come at the right times. I don’t mind that as opposed to some games we saw numerous times under McCann/Shota when the pace of the game just wasn’t there. It was probably helped by the pantomime atmosphere of the ref making some interesting calls (although on replays it looks like he got most correct) and the pitch invader. Definitely one of the more fun 0-0s I’ve seen. Its becoming more obvious that the play offs are out of reach this year, but I have high hopes for next season.
i think with the expected big incomings and outgoings pt2 in the summer, i don't think the season will fizzle out as it may at clubs like preston players will be really playing to cement their place for next season, think it'll be a decent end to the season
Sorry but you're clutching at straws now and he's certainly not amongst our highest attacking threats. Him playing in advanced positions is one of the reasons we've looked so blunt this season up top and he's one of the weakest in our squad at creating chances along with Longman and Oscar which tells you everything. I've compared his key passes numbers under the same metric to 3 of the sides around us and he's ranks in pretty much the same spot with them too (15th).
As dominant as it gets?? really? looked to me like they just sat back soaked up pressure and we just played it around aimlessly
Absolutely agree at times our first touch left a lot to be desired in particular Pelkas and Docherty. With a good first touch al la Connolly where the ball sticks to his laces we would have had a goal or a guilt edge chance would have been created.
Its always been a thought for me re managers. Rosie was a defender and as such had it drilled into him at the highest level what to do, when to do it etc. So its easyish for him to get that message across and patently has. Who at the club is responsible for the attacking side of 'tactics'. We've had this conversation here time and time again about getting people in who's job it was to score. They had it drilled into them what to do and when to do it... its alright saying 'chances will come' , they're coming but we aren't putting them away. Thats surely basic coaching and any given player has to have some help if its not happening for them. The number of shots Oscar scuffs is one too may and even Connolly has had major chances since he';s been here he hasnt put away... something isn't right.. In American Football (I know different game) defensive, offensive and special teams coaching...!!
You say that as if I didn't already post the key passes per 90 further up for all our midfielders. Slater's stats show him as a safe passer, keeps the ball but not much creativity with it. Tufan though has less key passes than him as well as a lower completion percentage. So again I'm asking, why are we scrutinising Slater's passing stats specifically to such a degree, when they actually show that he's making more key passes as well as keeping the ball better than the "class above", "best technical player at the club" who isn't subject to such attention?
Sorry but that's a wildly inaccurate description of what Preston did first half yesterday. Every time we pressed them they were bricking it, coughing up possession, being easily forced into off-balance hoofs that we were able to pick up. It was one of the most one-sided halves we've had at the stadium in a long time. They were terrible.
