Unashamedly pinched from the BBC. Who would be your cult hero for us. Just the one. BBC person picked Bob the Frog (Robert). Some might think of Shola. Others may think of Lovenkrands or Sibieski. For me the player ultimately has to be liked for no logical reason especially nothing to do with being a good/great player and so the likes of Bruno and Shearer shouldn’t really get a mention. My choice goes back in time to the one and only Big Bad John MacNamee. He was an absolute animal and wouldn’t last one tackle in today’s Prima Donna football matches. But he was our ‘hard’ man and in the 1960’s every team had at least one such player to ‘protect’ the skillful players and Big Bad John was one of the best in that category. Honourable mention to Billy Whitehurst. A journey man player but an absolute lunatic. And big Duncan Ferguson also a cult figure for me but probably more connected with the Scouse Mackems.
So we're only allowed to choose one, when you've unashamedly mentioned: Robert Shola Lovenkrands Sibierski Bruno Shearer MacNamee Whitehurst Ferguson Fix!
I'm going to 'do a Trev'. Seeing as the definitions of cult hero typically mean being worshipped but for a short period, or with limited success/achievement, then the likes of true club heroes like Keegan and Beardo are also out. For me, I'll always remember 'National Seb Bassong Day', so he gets my vote. Truly worshipped by many for a very short period. But notable mentions also to James Perch for going from zero to hero and to Tiote.
We got Mirandinha He's not from Argentina He's Brazilian He's ****ing brill When I lived in London and played football with a couple of Geordies they taught me that, Keegan MK1 days, good times.
Mira I think was famous for being taught English by Gazza and from shooting from impossible angles rather than passing. Loved the bloke. He was a genuine character.
Mira was actually taught English from a lass's Mum I went to school with in Blyth. He got taught the swearing from Gazza
I probably misunderstand the phrase but to me a cult hero is someone who people inside the club just "get" but those outside the club barely know and certain don't appreciate. Olivier Bernard
