Yeah, we would get a very good fee for sure, but it's the fact that if we were to stay up and he stayed with us then he could well have gone on to become an all time one-club legend, something which is extremely rare these days, particularly for clubs like Saints.
I'm not ****ing giving up. What is up with you bloody doom-mongers? Is this the way you run your lives away from the game? I hope not. Not specifically aimed at you Ronnie, it's just that this place is so sodding fatalistic. We're not down. Vin
They took Forster as well didn’t they? And Arsenal took Cedric, come to think of it. So anything could happen I suppose.
Don't see him at Man City, Man Utd or Chelsea, but could see Liverpool, Spurs and maybe Arsenal being interested in JWP in the summer. Can add Newcastle to that list too of the mega money clubs. But anyway, we'll see what happens in the summer. Few 'interesting' months ahead of us before we need to worry about losing JWP.
I'm with you. I think there is a 75-80% chance we may go down, but to me there is still that 20-25% chance we won't. Until it is mathematically impossible, there is always a chance. We havent helped ourselves, but it is not a foregone conclusion. We don't know what has happened behind the scenes, maybe SR offered JM a huge salary (more than normal) & huge bonus if we stay up and only until May. This could have been double a 'normal' salary and this was because they knew it was short term. Review it later they would say. For those of you that work in IT, similar things happen with contractors - a few years ago I did a spot of contracting and would go in do a really, really mundane role for more than a company's top permanent consultants would earn daily, but I knew and they knew I was filling a gap that was needed then and it was only for 3 months. JM may not want to take the risk of no renewal at the end of the year and SR want to take stock at the end of the season to see what they can do when they have time to think.
Im not sure how these things work, but would Marsch have had to give up the remainder of his Leeds payoff to join? Just imagining a scenario where we were trying to convince JM to give up 18-30 months guaranteed pay for the possibility of 4 months and a likely relegation, even if he did a reasonable job.
Sadly I don't run Southampton Football Club - would be fun though ey I can't speak for all, but my feeling is that us seemingly sticking with Selles feels a bit like the board are giving up on survival as they're making a decision that benefits next season rather than maximises chances of survival now. I get we are not mathematically down, and I'lll still watch every game with the hope we win and somehow turn this around, but surely you can appreciate that there are literally no signs pointing to us turning things around?
According to Betfair's odds (plenty of peer-reviewed studies have shown exchange odds to be accurate reflections of true odds) we have a 77% chance of relegation. So roughly 3 in 4. By all means hang your hat on that but in the meantime I'll be focusing on the 1/4 chance that we'll stay up. Not only is it more fun but I suspect it's better for your mental health. Vin
Nathan Jones is not the reason we are bottom of the league. He was crap, but he was hired mid season for a reason.
Certainly stranger things have happened in football than if we were to survive. Like I say, despite not expecting it to happen in the slightest, I'll obviously be hoping that somehow we pull this off. and thankfully football's effect on my mood is limited to getting pissed off during and about 30 minutes after the game, before I soon realise that it is my own bloody fault for supporting Saints and I wouldn't have it any other way!
The way I see it, Saints are simply helping their fans with the cost of living by getting relegated and making ST's cheaper.
We were one of the worst teams in the entire football league in 2022. The club has been in decline for a long time before they ever hired Jones. Looking just at this season, we have played 22 games, Jones was in charge for less than half of those, so no, he isn't the reason we are bottom. It is a collective of individuals including Ankersen, Semmens, Ralph, each and every player, and of course Jones has played his part.
