I am wondering why we even bother to pretend that this group is doing the job for which it was supposedly intended and that was to protect football clubs being taken over by ne'er do wells, and foreign ones at that. News that Spurs could fall into the hands of American/Iranian investors has led me to ask the question as to whether we need to bother having such a toothless group, supposedly interested in keeping football under safe stewardship, when you consider the number of our top clubs that have fallen for the monies thrown around by Arab conglomerates and power hungry Americans who want to rule our football. Many will say that the money invested has been well spent but Abramovich and the troubles in which Man City find themselves are examples of where looking the other way has led us down the wrong path. The lovable Glazers at Man Utd are classic cases of wealthy American idiots who have absolutely no idea about our football, and what it means to the supporters, and just want to add to their extensive financial portfolio. Fortunately it looks like even the Glazers are about to cash in on one of the most successful footballing franchises ever seen, but beware of the joy at that news because it looks as if another questionable owner from the Middle East may be coming down the tube, if today's speculation is true. Sheffield United are being checked over by some unknown Nigerian billionaire and goodness only knows where his money came from but I would bet it probably might smell a bit of corruption. Am I anywhere close to the mark where I see football falling down the cracks of apathy whereby anything English is up for sale to anyone, at any price, and to hell with the consequences? I will guarantee that all these dodgy suitors will get their way, without a single thought as to where the money came from? You only need to look at the murdering Saudi who bought Newcastle as your example.
Who are the owners of Koh-i-Noor diamond? Today, the diamond is on public display in the Jewel House at the Tower of London. The governments of India, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and even the Taliban insurgency have all claimed ownership of the Koh-i-Noor, demanding its return ever since India gained independence from the British Empire in 1947. Who is the rightful owner of the Elgin Marbles? The collection was in 1816 vested in the trustees of the British Museum in perpetuity under the terms of the Local and Personal Acts 56 George III c. 99. The Trustees now hold the Elgin collection under the terms of The British Museum Act (1963).
I think in the case of the Elgin Marbles, the politicians should leave it up to the archaeologists from the British Museum and their Athenian counterparts to agree where they could be housed. It was right that Elgin saved them - at the time they were being exploded and shot at, but todays modern Greece is very different and there is nothing to suggest that the Greeks are not capable of looking after them. I’m sure that we could come to a loan agreement with the Greeks and send some of the marbles back to them, whilst ‘loaning’ others and displaying them alongside plaster casts of the originals. It would be a fantastic opportunity to cement good relationships with Greece.
ahh, but had they not been rescued then they would not exist, so there should be gratitude for stepping in not . greed!
I demand reparations in case any of my ancestors were kidnapped by Barbary Pirates in the last 4 centuries.
one of the most amazing things is lately there have been a plethora of Programmes going back 4000 years and a lot featuring 2000 + years The ancient buildings of TURKEY/GREECE/ROME & EGYPT .. Were in many cases brought into existence by slave labour ... all we have for them is praise and admiration!!!!
Indeed But the one thing people could do something about, instead of trying to erase world and colonial history, is modern day slavery around the world, which is apparently many times over worse than it was 'back in the day'. But funnily enough, no one seems interested in doing anything about it.
Who wouldnt pass this test? How much money have you got seems to be the only entry question. The premier leagues a dodgy billionaires league.
