It is bizzare really. Someone we've looked at for a while who is available when we are desperately in need. Willing to take us on in our current state of nose deep in **** and yet we fluff about and it falls apart. I have no hope in anything other than re-invigoration at the moment and the board are blowing it big time IMO.
You can imagine the conversation: 'Dragan, apologies but we've just had a bit too much fun and, guess what, accidentally just lost £250m of your money, but hey that's life!!' Right, no chance! Let's just see how they manage the future, and we'll just have to realize they care about their money after all.
Here's my positive slant - SR decided they wanted Marsch, but on a short term deal. He wanted a long term deal and they couldn't find a compromise - in that equation, you can criticise the SR position about a short term deal, but if they think that's the right stance, not reaching agreement with Marsch isn't incompetence. Both parties have their positions and they are incompatible. FWIW I think we are down and I'd take the time to appoint a manager on that basis, rather than rush something in the vain hope an immediate appointment will perform a miracle.
Only way I can really get my head around this latest mess, is if the club have got the nod from someone rather more reputable. I doubt it, but that’s my latest straw, and I shall clutch to it.
Odd isn’t it. I’m wondering what’s happened to make him so outspoken. It’s like he’s a fan, not a journalist.
The other possibility, I suppose, is that there is a level of comfort with Selles. It's hard to know what is true from the rumours that crop up, but Ralph supposedly wanted Selles to be his successor, and it was claimed that he had sided with the exiled players. If those things are true (and it's a huge if), you can imagine a scenario where they're only interested in finding someone who is i) a significant addition that they would want to be here long-term, or ii) willing to sign on their terms. I don't necessarily agree with that approach, but there is some logic to it. The first big step to clear with a new manager, whoever they might be, is buy-in. Jones never cleared it, Marsch may or may not have been a hard sell there (I have no idea, really). If they felt Selles has it, that might work in his favour. And it has worked before. Not to play that card again, but Espanyol drafted in some guy who was the assistant coach of their women's team (who had never managed, and only recently got his coaching badges) to save them from relegation, and Poch worked out okay...
Agreed, I fully support Selles taking charge for the rest of the season and then we can take stock of where we are (almost certainly in the Championship with only half the squad still with us). Better employing the appropriate manager for our circumstances
I just want to support my club. There are so many things to be negative about, and critical of. There are so many hypotheticals. Who knows if Marsch would have been any good or not? Who knows how the Selles experiment will pan out? Everyone's an expert on the mistakes we've made, but what can we do about it? So I don't care. Personally I forgive SR, Ankersen, even Jones, and whoever else, for all the mistakes they've made. A club our size, realistically has a finite life expectancy in the Premier League, and 10+ years is a good run. Sooner or later this was going to happen because survival often comes down to a knife-edge. Imagine if Gabbi hadn't scored that goal against Swansea etc. I just feel it's pointless harping on about what might have been. Our poor club is in a right sh*t state, and I think we all need to just get back to supporting it, come what may. So I'm fully behind Selles. Fully behind SR. Fully behind the lads.
Regardless of the length of contract, Marsch may just have had second thoughts. Wouldn’t blame him if he did.
I don`t blame Marsch for knocking us back if he felt there was a lack of commitment from the club. It doesn`t show any commitment either to Selles if the club were prepared to bring in a stop-gap, in preference to him. A bit of a shambles!
I think with Marsch in charge or someone with a degree of experience we have a small, 10% chance of staying up. With Selles it’s zero. I can’t believe he will have the nouce or team building ability to achieve a near impossible task. I sort of get the Ralph recommendation side for Selles but if so, why didn’t SR take a punt on him previously, in some capacity. Not really being serious because with the WC window approaching what we needed was some who would galvanise the squad Just have to accept what the bookies tell us. Such a balls up; such a waste; such a shame.
