If he takes 5 shots wide to get 1 into the corner. I’d take that over 4 shots hit straight at the keeper not going in.

Well given past performance is actually a fair guide to future performance I think it's highly relevant

I don't think it's too much to ask for highly paid professional football's to just try to get the ball on target.

Was more the fact that our game is tomorrow so that’s more important than what he does today… <whistle>

In the last 3 days we have seen the following:

Material impact of VAR on title race. potential 2 point swing towards man city due to total incompetence.

Material impact of VAR on the race for european spots. Brighton having 2 points swing due to VAR incompetence ruling out a legitimate goal, cheslea being denied opportunity to get 2 more points as well though

Material impact on relegation battle potentially. West ham given a point that takes then 2 clear of relegation spots at this point. A clear 100% penalty ignored.

In ye olden days it was merely official incompetence on the park that led to such effects. Lets be clear, the VAR utter incompetence to look at blatant issues is only backing up the same referee incompetence who are not giving these decisions. 2 offsides not flagged. Pen not awarded.

Just a quick note. The guy with ZERO experience put on VAR for our game tonight has been replaced by andre marriner. however the very inexperienced ref is not replaced so we have the potential for control of this game to be lost and serious injuries as a result.

Or on the other hand you have a ref that hasn’t been in the prem making **** decisions for 15 years and might actually be decent at his job hence the promotion and being given a derby match to ref?

Potter said something akin to what I've been saying since VAR's inception - decisions are made by humans and are subject to human error.
We live in a technological age where people have come to think of tech as an infallible overseer rather than the mere tool it actually is.
The expectations put on VAR were comically absurd from the beginning - it was hailed as making the game entirely fair and eliminating human error, something that system would never be able to do. It was supposed to solve all sorts of problems, but now most of its time is spent getting offside wrong.
What fraction of a second does it take for someone to run say, a foot, beyond another? Can we be sure that it's the exact same fraction of that second that the ball left the boot of the player passing it forward?
More importantly, does it even matter that much?
It's a level of precision that isn't possible with the current system, nor is it particularly desirable.
Leave it to the on-field officials - they will get it wrong sometimes, but unless it's drastically wrong it makes little difference imo.
For me, the only practical use of VAR is to pick up on serious off-the-ball incidents that happen outside of the ref's vision so he can be advised to look at them.
As it stands the system is just frustrating everyone because their expectations of it are too high.

Yeah as i said before this point we asked officials to do their best and if thy got it wrong people would sing the referee is a... whatever.

that was about it cos nothing could be done.

Then we had a lot of small clubs talking about gross unfairness and looking for reviews (see warnock for example)

I agree that the expectations and rules put on VAR were ridiculous. the culture of cover up and hiding the process is making this even worse.

The reality is that if the officials got together on an open mike and talked through their decision processes we'd all lose our nuts based on how poor it is.

You hit the nail on the head with the does it really matter?

Its blatant that west ham gained massively form a poor decision and that brentford were miles off. It actually doesn't matter 95% of the time until it REALLY matters on the day you put a side down or change the direction of a title.

what i mean by this is that in general the better a team you are the less you rely on one chance to make a difference and you brush it off and go again. The small teams are always cursing their own luck simply because there's either far more opportunities conceded or far fewer opportunities created. Every little thing Get magnified.

In general I'd prefer the on field officials make their call and then use their tech to help rather than guess. cos frankly half the time they are really guessing. the watch for the ball over the line works just fine. If you've open call and you are not sure then have a look FFS. No big deal, pure common sense.

The offside stuff is incredibly frustrating for all due to how long it takes, if the linos do thier job then most of the time this is not an issue

The rules for offside are now almost impossible to be a linesman to enforce We have made it so complicated to flag a man off they have to decides who is interfering and not as well and trying to figure out which man if off or not off and who is last man etc etc

I just think we are being over pedantic with stuff and too obtuse about data. Refs don't want us to know who they make a decision, they do not want to vocalise why they have waved off a pen shout as its inevitable that the next thing coming is where is the card for dive.

the better you are as a side the better the changes of this happening.

If you make 20 chances a game and miss 18 you look a hero (LFc last year) If you drop to only making 10 and miss 9 of them then you might look ****.

same for Decisions. If you've 5 pen shouts a game and get the odd one ok but if you might have 1 pen shout all game and don't get it some clubs scream unfair.

Same for offsides. Last year we might be caught playing the high line once or twice a game and Alisson might sweep up but if not the var might help. Now we are letting sides waltz past us 5 or 6 times so are getting done up like kippers.

the more opportunities you give officials to make the call you don't want, well chances are they make more calls you don't want.

When I ask does it matter I'm referring purely to the midge's dick offside scenario.
Obviously correct penalty calls are more crucial - but I can't help but repeat myself again - it's a subjective decision, and as long is the game is played and judged by humans it will remain so.
And we'll all continue to argue about it ad nauseam.
My point about VAR is that it was touted as putting an end to all that, and that was and is a forlorn hope.

    the offsides certainly don't matter.

I still believe explaining yourself through the decision live would be the best thing but I would also temper that by giving managers one review a half or something so we don't have multiple instances

for red cards and pens they can be subjective and some managers call for the most ridiculous stuff.

but at least explain yourself, most rational neutrals will learn from the explanation and rule discussion and stop acting up. it might even drive consistency.

We've discussed this before as well. One of the legitimate fears of eavesdropping refs is the disgraceful and highly vocal contempt players show for any decision that goes against them.
Rugby players don't act like that.
TV simply cannot broadcast the foul-mouthed bile that comes from footballers, and TV is God.

500k fine per club per offense and it'd magically cease.

Rugby players give plenty i'm sure but its really iron clad only the captain talks.

I'm very sure that a good old fining would stop them in their tracks.

In any event the ref only needs to turn on the mike for the chatter about the decision. What did he see, whats the interpretation, show me the angles again ... etc etc.

I mean the west ham "save". I'd love to hear the ref explain why he didn't give it in the first place then view the repeats and go oh ****... well yeah or not. If moyes had a review and used it and forced the ref to go through the process then I'm very sure its not going to go like this:

"I saw ball to hand, soft decision is not a penalty as the arm was not in an unnatural position"

I'm sure it'd be really "erm I didn't see it really, what the **** happened then"

If a ref said right, "i saw the contact. I don't believe it was enough to make him fall over like that and he could have played on" then I'm fairly sure all of us will be asking pretty soon as to why players flopping are not getting cards.

I'd love to see managers losing their one appeal to a flop and crying about it.

but only for him, no body else.

I like this new rule that’s come out of no where that if 3 or more players run up to the ref to have a moan then that person gets booked.

No idea where it’s come from. How consistent it will be given but both lemina and Dias been booked for it this weekend already.
