The full results of scans carried out yesterday are expected to be released today. But the early signs are that the damage the England Under 21 international (right) sustained in Saturdayâs game against Manchester United should not sideline him for any real length of time. The teenager went down in only the second minute of the game at Old Trafford as he adjusted his balance hoping to charge down a Rio Ferdinand clearance. He planted his boots awkwardly in the turf, put his body weight on his knee as he slipped and needed to be stretchered from the field, clearly in some distress. That prompted fears that it could be medial ligament damage, cruciate ligament damage, or even both and a grim Steve Bruce said in post-match Press conference: âIt looks as though heâs got a serious knee injury. âIf that proves to be the case then thatâs seven bad knee injuries for us in a year â itâs unbelievable.â Sunderland were however unable to establish at the weekend the full extent of the injury, because of the immediate swelling around the knee. Wickham was able to walk away from Old Trafford but that in itself need not necessarily have been significant â Michael Turner walked from the Stadium of Light after injuring his knee colliding with a goal post last month, only to discover days later that he would be sidelined for months. Wickham though looks as though he has escaped that fate. The striker revealed on the Twitter social networking site: âScans showed injury not as bad as first thought, waiting to see a knee specialist later in the week.â If the damage is minor, then the fortnightâs international break comes at the perfect time and itâs possible he could even be available for the Fulham game. Itâs more likely that he will miss a game or two, but even that would be a much better prospect than the initial fears that he could be out for the rest of the year and potentially for the rest of the season. Lets all keep our fingers crossed
Whatever happens, all our players should be doing the knee strengthening exercises Meyler was supposed to do. How many knee injuries have we had the last 2 seasons? its ridiculous.
Great news! Here's hoping that Connor is ok because without his talents our options to change a game that needs to be changed are limited to say the very least. Thats what happens when a club doesn't ensure there are enough strikers on the books.
Talking about the Fulham game, will meylar/Gardner be given a chance in that match?, due to Sebs suspension and of course Bruce should start JI, Bentdner up front in midfield there is Cattermole, Elmo, and Rico.
Can't disagree but I don't know how you stop an ACL or any other ligament injury in the knee - I have had an ACL operation and it happened to me when I was walking and stood on something so how do you stop it - I wasn't over exercising or overstretching - just literally went over a stone on the pavement and did it. My physio said it's a difficult injury to avoid as there are no specific exercises you can do to stop it from happening - although, to be fair, he's not being paid loads by a footy club to analyse my knee!! Hope there is something they can do to stop it!!
