He’s a nasty twat. The video tells us all you need to know about his character.

Evans and Greenwood have both been accused of rape and not been convicted, that’s the similarity I was referring to. Claiming I have labelled him a rapist is something that’s rattling around in your head, not mine.

He's been found guilty without a trial... just not sentenced...

Evans was convicted. He got off on appeal after he rustled up some witnesses.

Fair enough. I wasn’t trying to encapsulate the full intricacies of each case in the dozen or so words I posted.

It's a bloody minefield, and I have no idea what the correct answer is, beyond there certainly cannot be one size fits all if we're looking to protect people from rapists, and others from the stain of false allegations.

Rape is very difficult to prove, as it is more often than not one persons word against another, and the argument is that by publicising the name of the accused, other people may come forward that could show a pattern of behaviour.

The issue arises for the accused if nobody does. They also don't seem to check too hard to see if the accuser has a pattern if behaviour that includes similar allegations.

Ultimately, it can end up like this case, where people prefer to believe the allegation because the guy seems to be an obnoxious git anyway and the sort of lifestyles involved are way outside the experience and understanding of most of us.

Actually, I prefer to believe the allegation in this case because of the audio recording of him coercing her into sex, rather than him being obnoxious or living a lavish lifestyle as a footballer. That’s just me though.

I offer my ignorance as my defence. I've not played that clip, or even followed the case in any detail.

Accepting that, I do still stand by my post as a general point though.

I think people believe the allegation because there's video and audio evidence.

This is the key in this case, CPS have dropped it (as I understand) as 'key witnesses' have backed out which leaves CPS in a position where they're unlikely to win. The video, pics and audio are very damning. It'll be interesting to see where Man U go with this, I kind of suspect that financially, he's potentially more of a liability than he is an asset, with sponsors no doubt prepared to drop out if he plays again, not to mention the reputational damage.

He may have got away with avoiding conviction, but it seems he's pretty much being considered guilty anyway. Man United have told him to stay away from the club, England won't consider playing him under Southgate, all his sponsorship deals have been cancelled and he's now stuck in limbo.

I'd imagine that his only real option is to seek a club abroad, can't see him playing in England

About 70k rape cases are reported to the police in England and Wales every year. There are about 2k prosecutions. It’s a vastly under reported crime with about 20% of women reporting that they have experienced serious sexual assault during their lifetime, so the abysmal prosecution numbers are even worse in that context. It’s a vicious circle where women have no confidence that even if they do report rape, they will be taken seriously and the offender caught and brought to justice. So the offenders get away with it and become even more obnoxious. That’s before we get to high profile cases, and the victim having to face that everyone and their dog will have an opinion on the worst and most personal event of their life.

Men may be worried about being falsely accused of rape - women are frightened of actually being raped, assaulted and killed. The numbers of false rape accusations are minuscule compared to the actual numbers of rape happening. We should be teaching our sons that the standard isn’t that you’re good to go unless the lass says no, they should be sure that she is actively and enthusiastically saying yes.

That and the fact it was dropped after key witnesses withdrawn. He was also not prosecuted for contacting the victim and witnesses while on bail and breaching the condition of his bail

You are going to stick to your line of if accused of rape you are guilty come what may. He didn’t just rustle up some witnesses. New evidence came forward which resulted in a retrial. The fact this was not handled correctly in the first place is demonstrated by the fact his original defence team had to pay him £800,000 in compensation.
