Have to agree with this. In my opinion the veneer of civilisation is pretty thin. Not surprising really when you consider the minute amount of time humans have even attempted civilisation as opposed to fighting with nature to survive. Even on here where posters are generally very polite to each other you can sense sometimes a smouldering resentment or hatred towards people and groups that hold different views on how society should operate. Very understandable when you do remember that it is really only within a few lifetimes that society has evolved to where it is today.
Being civil is the only way human societies can scale in a manner that allows for some free will and happiness. The alternative regime is in insect land (ants/bees/termites) . Which is no free will, operating a simple behaviour program, effectively every member is the same in utility and treatment. Looks a lot like how 20th century attempts to operate Marxism fared (although to be kind to said insects, they don't indulge in acts of genocide within their society) .
