Which war fought since WW2 was to keep Britain free? The war ion Iraq to destroy those hideous weapons of mass destruction? They are political wars that Britain due to its past feels the need to keep fighting. Remember whoever you like - nobody is arguing you cannot - but you should defend the liberty of those who disagree with you

When 100% of people in football teams and on TV wear a poppy it is self evident that it does not come about by allowing personal freedom

    Dear Leo

We have begged to differ before - but where do you get this 'demonising everyone who does not wear a poppy' bit from. I think you love winding people up. Who is demonising who???? this is one aspect of the arguement I haven't seen and if it is true then yes it is wrong, but how dare you criticise people if their beliefs are not your beliefs.

Yes Leo the wars are a result of politics, but the men and women who fight them do not to so for political reasons! They do it out of patriotism and selflessness. There are no political parties in the forces, there are no agendas there. There are just men and women who fight for their country and often die for it.

I think that when Chamberlain tried to appease Hitler, that was politics. He failed to prevent war because Hiltler didn't want to play politics, instead wished to rule Europe.

In any case the poppy is a symbol of remembrance for those who fell in war, not for the politicians or maniacs who create it.

Come on Leo - You can quote Iraq also try Lybia or Afganistan - these countries leadrers also assisted in financing and training the IRA together with other terrorist groups that attacked and killed innocent civillians in the UK. What about Korea (you saying my Father died for nothing??????????)

Just get off your high horse for a few mins and show a bit of respect for those that gave their lives so you could be so insulting.

Now that is a poignant signature Dan ,When remembering our fallen politics doesnt come into it , people from all political persuasions fell in the line of duty!

I am sorry you think I am a WUM - you are so wrong. What I argue are my genuine personal beliefs - you only have to look at this discussion to see two or three responses to me which border on attack rather than explanation of the holder's views. Even your comment here is unfair - why are my views winding up -and no one else's are - it is because I am in the minority of almost one and so am fair game for it. In my local paper the letters page is full of attacks on our Mayor as for religious beliefs he is a Pacifist and chooses not to lead the Armitistice Day ceremony - he allows his deputy to do it - seems fair to me but not to pages of letter writers. Finally you ask how I dare criticise people if their beliefs are not mine - I have never done that and have gone out of my way lots of times n here to support those who believe in poppy day. This post of yours is totally unfair and if you are the person I think you are you will re-read some of my comments in which I have even said I would defend to the death the rights of others to have different opinions.

All I have asked for is for yo poppy day supporters to allow us poppy day dislikers the right to OUR beliefs.

I do not think in a free society I should be forced to support something which I do not believe in and yet many of you here have attacked me as though I criticised you - which I have not

You will gather you have offended me

Do you accept my right to hold an opinion that differs from the majority - and would you defend my right to express it?

I think I had better bow out of this discussion now as I have failed to make the point that it is not remembering the fallen that is the problem but the media hype and the fact that it seems everyone on live TV is forced to bow to the opinions of the majority.

I would have set this as a separate thread but feared to as I know certain people do not like threads set up to discuss contentious issues - for me it would have kept ths for those who wanted to discuss it and away from those who want "lighter" chat.

It disappoints me to be called a WUM, crass and to be told that I talk utter tosh. One day some of you will have a pesonal viewpoint that does not accord with the majority and I hope you enjoy the way people argue against you. Or perhaps you will all stay safely in the arms of the comforting majority.

I cannot even think of Leo as a WUM. For those of you who have known him for some time, you will know that he writes with conviction about football and other topics that give us plenty to get our teeth into. I have not agreed with him on this topic, but he does not always agree with me. That is good. We are all entitled to our views and thankfully can say within reason what bugs us or interests us.

Maybe we have been round it enough now, and will not progress the argument much further if we continue. That is just my view, others may think differently.

The fact that the debate has taken place at all is due to not606 allowing such off topic subjects to be aired. There are things that I wish were different, but in this respect we have gained something.

Firstly, I apologise if I caused any offence with my comment regarding crassness. I did not intend to cause offence, but I apologise if I did. Secondly, I fully respect your belief in the whole subkect of "Poppies" and I fully support your right to have the choice not to wear a Poppy and express your opinions on the subject. What we will never agree on is your assertion that all sorts of groups of people are either forced to wear a Poppy or do not have the ability to form the opinion as to whether they should wear one or not - on that we will have to agree to disagree.
    Cheers Mate

Interesting on The One Show just now... Gene Simmons just asked the camera to zone in on his poppy saying it "isn't just a fashion statement".

I came across this bit in Matt Rowson's book Watford FC, On This Day that seems ironic in the light of all that followed.

    Saturday 6th November 1982
Les Taylor's goal was enough to seal a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane, an eye-catching result that provoked the first barrage of criticism at Watford'e style of play from an outraged Fleet Street. Leading the assault was Keith Burkinshaw, later assistant manager to Aidy Boothroyd at Vicarage Road.

Just shows that we were ahead of time back then - Stoke play exactly the same way now without a whimper from anywhere.
