    Happy birthday Chas...

Lenny - I only have the appetite for a bacon sandwich this morning, which begs the question, what are you keeping the pigs for?

Frenchie the Somme was nearly 100 years ago and yes a very tragic event. More men died in the Battle of the Somme than in any one single battle before or since over 465,000 men, 34,000 on the first day alone.

This we must remember - so that we and our children & our children's children don't make the same mistakes. This is what Poppies are about - Please wear them with pride they are not political weapons.

Yes I did realise I had made a mistake last night, but was still doing my homework and didn't have time to edit it.

The council workmen were out clearing leaves from the area surrounding the war memorial this morning in readiness for the 11th. Looking at the trees above they could be spending a few more hours out there this week.

I wasn't trying to make you look bad Frenchie - just to point out how long we (as a Nation) have been wearing the poppy - The unknown soldier in Westminster Abbey was dug up on the Somme.

I'm sure they will keep the memorial clear and be proud of doing it.

Thanks for the greeting old man

Morning all from Gloucester, a bit dull and grey outside but never mind! Been a busy bee, already changed the bedding and got it washed and it is in the dryer now:) First load of cooking done a pot of what I call Mummies mince;) (all in one mince and tatties with carrots):) 3 meals for later in the week, also just popping out to the charity shop to hand in some t-shirts which have not seen the light of day this summer so off they go for someone else to make the most of. When I get back i will start the 2nd pot of the day chicken biryani, a packet mix for the spices and the left overs of our roast chicken:) It does taste mighty fine though:)

    Anyway laters !

One of my reasons for being passionate about poppies and rememberence Sunday was watching my Mum and Nan crying their eyes out each November - Nan lost 3 brothers in WW1.

I thought prety girls were compulsory in France, even Mme. Sarkozy is pretty and politicians always end up with the ugly ones so there must be many really nice girls walking about.

I have seen Middlesbrough's goal and can only say if it were one of our footballers trying to score the goal he would have been offside.

Morning all, this is my 1550th post in the nest so i will try to make it a good one.

With reference to the poppy debate, i think it does border too much on politics and it would open a cup of worms. However, it is very likely that one of the players or staff involved in the match will have lost a relative or a friend in battle. Should they not be allowed to remember them? The poppy is not the symbol for a political party or a radical movement or a terrorist party, it is simply a symbol of remembrance and thanks for the sacrifice made. If the Iranian's decided to wear anti-Israel symbols then it is clearly a political statement and racist, this cannot be allowed in the same way that racist chants are forbidden. It is clear that some symbols have racist connotations and meanings and these have no place in the game. The players would wear a black armband for a college who lost his life or for a family member so why shouldn't they remember the friend or relative lost in battle.

Happy birthday Charlie. May you have many more!!

Is poppy wearing not for the individual to decide? I understand that people wear them or do not wear them for reasons but why is there such a fuss because someone is not seen to wear one?
Did not a lot of British people and others die to allow everyone to have the liberty to object to something and not be persecuted, if they wished to. Or is political correctness now being the new fascism.

With thanks to online dictionaries for this post.

You are right AK, it should be for the players to decide if they wear the poppies. I dont think its political correctness at all. If a person chooses not to wear them then so be it, but they cannot deny that what those men did was brave and selfless.
